I have just one wish: don't ever block the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons from working.

Why would anybody do that?

Yes that's a good question but it seems that under OS 4.1 you'll have to wait until the whole directory is loaded (and displayed) before you'll be able to validate or cancel the requester (really annoying when it's a save requester opened by your browser to ask for where to save the file for example).

Ideaology is the argument, consistancy matters.

So Amiga OS (and its parts) should never evolve? Always
stay the same even if they are bad design choices today?

If that would be the case I would never ever buy an Amiga.
For me Amiga is a better, more efficient way of doing things..
This does not mean that Amiga OS shouldn't ever borrow
and steal features that are good from other OSes. Quite the
opposit I think. IMHO

As far as operating systems are concerned, it's not about "borrowing" or "stealing" ideas anymore: we are not in the 1980s. It's about using what's more efficient, practical and intuitive for the user. Of course we shouldn't adopt or imitate every single feature that Windows or MacOS come with! But ignoring positive developments or trends means becoming more and more marginalized.

The ASL requester is very efficient, I dont see the point in any more buttons, and I dont see the point in moving any of them elsewhere - it serves no purpose.

MorphOS has something that probably is supposedly "modern", but I find it messy, inefficient to use and annoying over time.

Resized Image

I much more prefer the simpler, faster, less cluttered filerequester of ASL, with big easy to hit "Volumes" and "Parent" instead of these, especially from a noob's POV, meaningless tiny buttons (or whatever they are) at the top of the window.

I would like to see an option for the ASL font requester to not have the size selection part.

Size isn't always needed but there is no way of disabling it.

I don't see much of a problem with the MorphOS requester. OK, the folder images are not necessary (directories can as well be distinguished by a different colour, like in the AmigaOS filerequester) but otherwise it's a well-designed piece of GUI. Directory tree navigation buttons are grouped together, put in a logical place (ABOVE the dir/file list because they MANAGE the list), and separately from requester function buttons (Ok/Cancel).

I agree that your example is a bad one from newbie POV.
Many small buttons with single chars to describe them is not
optimal. But when you're used to it, it does save GUI space.

It would have been better if they had full text or even
graphics instead.

EDIT: But I guess they chose this way because it will stay the
same over every language, thus making it easy to guide
newbies..

slightly OT, but does someone know if it is considered to implement the binary prefix in OS4?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebi#IEC_standard_prefixes

What do you people think, would it be a good idea to implement them at all? I stumbled over it when I was reading an article about "ZFS"
