Using the latest Uboot here.
Also using SFS to boot OS4.

For the internet problem, this could be a dhcp conflict.
I get the same problem occaisonally.
Kill the power to the Sam for 5 mins and then try again.
Dont boot into OS4 1st, just go straight to the installation.

Found this on the Cube website:-

When the installation process asks you to select an ethernet hardware, select "ibm_newemac".

Will try it tomorrow,

Dont waste your time with that.
I did with the 1st version for the Sam.
Follow my previous advice.
Take it from someone who has learnt the hard way.

If the connection is available in the 1st instance it will find the config on it's own.
If it isnt connected, then telling the install what ethernet driver to work will do you no good anyway.

One other thought what file system are you using for your AOS4 partition?

I am using SFS/00, maybe booting is only fast with FFS under parthenope.

If it is any help, I am running SFS/00 for my AmigaOS boot partition.

OK, used the new Net-install iso on the ACube website. This time eth0: detected immediately.

Following Elwood's guide now at step 16 having just chosen the Desktop environment. However, the installation has now stalled at "Select and install software" after about 5% completion.

Does Debian really install? I'm starting to have my doubts.

Perhaps I need to choose a better Debian Mirror site for the software download. I selected one in the UK. Can anyone please advise a site which is known to work?

BTW trying to install on a SAM440-Flex (800MHZ)

UPDATE: tried again using a different Debian mirro (one in France) but installation process still stalled at the same place!

This might be the solution/problem:

Quote:

Note that something has changed in the Debian mirrors a few months ago. This makes the installation freeze as you experienced when it checks for the mirrors.

After many tests by me and Faranheit, we reached this conclusion.

Unfortunately, there's no good solution to this.
We managed to get around it installing with the ethernet cable unplugged (or the network not configured).
It makes the install process skip reading the mirrors.

Then when the system is installed, you can add mirrors by hand in your sources.list and update your system.

Elwood pointed this one out BEFORE the release of Experimental GART enabled release !!! So might already been fixed with the new Experimental GART release.

Confirmed.
Now use only the experimental ISO and you can "talk" with mirrors without problems.

Note: I'm waiting for a non-experimental ISO to update my install guide.

Many thanks for the tip. I thought I had downloaded ACube's experimental GART release, but I will do it again and give it another try. I will report back.

I've given up for the day. I downloaded and Installed the experiential Debian net-install iso. I got right to the end of the install and as it completed (successfully) the CD-rom drive opened, I pressed continue and the SAM rebooted to uboot. ARRRGGGHHH!!

There did not appear to be an option to stop this process. Is there a way to get back to the end of the install process, without going through the whole installation process?

Thanks,

TrevorD

Thats normal you have now installed Debian Linux fine by the sound of things on your sam

Now you just need to install the new boot loader on acubes website so you get a boot menu with both linux and AOS4 in it.

The boot loader is called "parthenope" and can be downloaded from acubes website and installed with hdtoolbox under OS4.

Its the new boot loader that has been giving me the slow OS4 boot issue so I have unistalled it at the moment and only install it when I want to use Linux. As not everyone is having problems with it it may just work without slowing down the loading of the OS4 kernel and modules like it dose for me.

SUCCESS. It now works on my SAM Flex too!

My problem was caused by hitting return at the end of the (long) install process which shutdown the session before I could make the final edits to the menu.lst file. I had to go through the whole process again to get to that point.

Nevermind, I now have Debian Lenny running of my SAM Flex-800. Compared to AmigaOS4.1 it's pretty slow but at least it's running. Many thanks to the Elwood guide and all who offered advice and assistance.

There are a few tricks to get Lenny working a bit quicker. Try these

1. Install "preload", this is a small daemon which preloads your most used programs, pretty nifty little program.

2. Use KDE, I have found this to be the fastest desktop.

3. Install Opera 10.10, yes this is the latest version of Opera and it is available on the Opera site. Opera runs quite a bit faster than Iceweasel, it also has widgets to add if you need them.

4. If you want to use Iceweasel (Firefox) Google "how to speed up Firefox" there are a number of tweaks you can use.

5. Google "how to speed up Linux", ther are a number of tricks there particularly in paging but STAY AWAY from boot tweaks, they will just not work on Amiga HW.

I have installed and re-installed the latest Lenny/Sam/Flex offering several times, mainly because I push to find the limits and find them I do. My latest crash was unexpected, I had played around enough and decided I just wanted a stable system. I transferred GBs of music and video to the HD, played a file in Mplayer, stopped , played it under VLC and BOOM! -:(

It is not all dead just xorg got stuffed up but I can't find a way of fixing it without getting access to a similar xorg file.

Good luck with your installs.

Try LXDE (apt-get install lxde) which is the faster I have found. It beats KDE hands down, but it's less friendly.

Go to this page and look towards the bottom, you can add the repository to your apt sources list. Or you can go to the packages (look towards the top left) and you can down load the individual packages for Lenny PPC.

Main Page
http://debian-multimedia.org/ if you use the repository make sure to download and install the keyring package.

Packages
http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/stable/main/binary-powerpc/

Look for libdvdcss2
Make sure you install vlc from the normal Debian repsotories as the one in this repository has a bug with an associated library.
