Taking you back to where you were.... NOT

Minor complaint, and perhaps not easily fixed:

When ever I start OWB, the first time I go to an Amigans.net thread I've bookmarked, it redirects me to a screen saying "Taking you back to where you were...", and then supposedly back to where I was expecting to be.

Except it doesn't, because my bookmark used a HTML anchor (#anchor) in the URL to take me to the exact last post I'd read, while the redirected page takes me back to the *top* of the same page (due to loosing the anchor).

The only way to fix this issue would be to stop redirecting me in the first place. I don't know why it does the redirecting (since AW.net works fine without it), but presumably it does some important cookie-related thing that wouldn't be easy to avoid?

Or perhaps it could temporarily open a "pop-up" page to do the required magic, and leave the original page intact?

I've noticed this alot lately with AWeb or OWB when following links to amigans pages embedded in other forum posts, be they here or at AW.net

interestingly it doesn't happen when I do

UrlOpen http://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/ ... t_id=45791#forumpost45791

and then choose OWB.

Is it possible that the format of the forum links has changed so that your older book marks are out of date?

i made a test link from AW.net using this thread

http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/v ... hp?topic_id=30779&forum=4

the links work, so either my theory is correct about a slight change of link "syntax" (can Orgin confirm?) or some people embed links differently

@ Chris

try rebookmarking your "broken" threads

No change has been made as far as I know, except a server migration that was made a few months back.

And if there's a problem somewhere then there are no experienced PHP devs available that can do any deep modification/fixes at this point anyway. The current state of the site is in WYSIWYG mode.

I guess a server migration might have changed something, if the underlying php wa different perhaps,. but it seems unlikely.

@ChrisH

Perhaps you could post an example of the links that don't work for you.

The problem happens with EVERY thread I bookmark, but only for the first one I open after starting OWB. And it doesn't happen if I visit http://amigans.net before the bookmark. So to recreate the problem, bookmark the appropriate place, close OWB, restart OWB, and then open the bookmark (without going anywhere else first).

Here's an example link to your last post, which was obtained from the "#6" in the top right corner of your post.

I can now replicate the problem more precisely

It occurs when you are logged in via the "remeber me " option. It seems that this redirects you via a login sequence or something, then sends you back to the page you trying to view, somewhere in the prcess it loses the #section of the url although it still seems to show in the url gadget.

That explains why it only happens on the first visit to amigans in any once session.

Well in AWeb's case part of the problem is that AWeb deals with the #part of the url internally, never sending it to the server, so the server never knows to include it in the redirection. I'm not sure if that's standards conformant behaviour or not.

I don't know if it's possible to get the equivalent http trace for OWB, but it maybe that it's behaving similarly, if so then it's not fixable at Orgin's end.

I believe that IS standard behaviour, which is why I said the only way to solve this was to stop redirecting in the first place (or else use a separate pop-up window).
