Supported SCSI HW on OS4 [Final]
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Hi,

Now .. OS4 is Done ;)
New HW is on the Way [hopefull] - I NEED IT ! ;)

Time to look for the system components - mainly
SCSI card ...

If the cache on SCSI cards supported by the actual Driver ?
If cards supported with more than One chanel ... ?
Will in future more [and better !] scsi chips supported ?

Straight bought a 80GB DLT drive [UW-SCSI] and think over
a new [72GB] SCA-SCSI server HD .......

Hi,

to clarify ...
Have ATM found 3 cards with LSI53c896 scsi chips :

Tekram DC-390U2WE

-2 channel and no Cache RAM

HP RAID 4SI PCI 4 port Ultra2 SCSI RAID

-2 scsi chips and 2 channel per chip [4 channel] and
32MB cache RAM [battery backed up 72h]

LSI Logic MegaRAID Elite 1500 Dual-Channel Ultra2 SCSI RAID Controller

-2 channel and up to 128MB cache RAM [BBU]

so .. my question ...

Will on the Tekram work the second channel ?
And can i use the Cache RAM ?
And if the second chip supported on the HP controller ?

Hi,

@cHaOs667

Thanks ;)

btw. .. which chip is used on the controller ..?

Have mainly focused on the 53c896 chip, it is the
[imho] latest incarnation of the 53c8xx family and
support 2 channel UW2-SCSI transfer [80MB/sec per
channel] .. well for the connection of ever one of
my two HD?s per channel .. everyone is a server
grade sca-hd with peek of ~80MB/sec .. so the lack
of actuall scsi [U160/U320] its painable with it

Hi,

before you heat up too much, please note that the scsi driver was made only to "fill the gap" for people with an a1 and old scsi stuff. As such, it implements only 8 bit asynchronous transfers, and in a very trivial way, which means it tops at 5 MB/s.

It will stay like that, it will not evolve towards a high performance solution, because it was never the point.

Thus, don't spend any money on high end scsi stuff, in the purpose of using it with this driver.

Hi,

@sg2

This is VERY sad.

[btw.."high end scsi stuff" was FiberLine/SAS SCSI or at least
U320SCSI .. nut UW2 or U160SCSI .....]

I thinked with this mid-range-SCSI driver [from the supported
Chips max UW2 {80MB/sec} was possible] i can use it at least fully....

But now it looks like a BIG downgrading from my actual setup [Cyberstorm
MK-III UW-SCSI] who i have ~38MB/sec transfer rates ..... :( :(

If not another driver in development [even commercial] who give
me the 80MB/sec [UW2] .. i musst say OS4 is no option for me !

This is sad .. now who the Gaming question looks good with eUAE
and the native planar support .. the most ixemul stuff i use
runn now OS4 native or run with the [buggy] OS4 ixemul lib..
only the SCSI issue is a problem .. and i will on my Main computer
NOT switch back to IDE/SATA ....

I musst rethink the consequences ....... :(

It puzzles me what you need such fast transfer rates for and how SATA can not be fast enough.

Hi,

@Kraftwerk

mmh .. it was a bit unclear ..
I need UW2 support on OS4 .. not the 80MB/sec .. sorry.
And my HD?s make this speed .. good to run it at
the speed he araives. [it was expensive enough]

Even UW2 scsi is not very actuall .. but it became me
is for the time being enough ...

With 8bit aSync transfer .. SCSI ist not usable for
anything serious on OS4 [only for OLD SCSI scanner and
emergency transfer the old data from scsi drives to non
scsi drives]

Mhh ... a very sad situation ..
I have 2 options now-

Buy for my 2 SCA HD?s and the DLT streamer 3 UW-SCSI>SATA
convertors to use it on the new HW .. with lower speed,
more costs,....

Or buy an alternative Computer and use WinUAE [with OS3.9]
on it for Games and wait for better scsi support on OS4 ..

Both are very "NOT GOOD" ...

Hi,

if i buy new Amiga HW .. i will not go behind the possibilities
i have allready here on my A4000/060 CS-MK-III !

And SCSI is for ME a part of Amiga !

I know i cant hope for actuall support [U320/SAS] ...
But more than very Basic support .. an a little bit more
than my actuall [10 year old] system reached ist not
to much for 2007 ......

My scsi driver has never been intended for anything else than allowing copying old stuff to ATA/SATA drives, and maybe using old scanners etc.

Now, there may be other drivers from other people in the future... Maybe an evolution of igniatios's cybppc.device ?
