Transferring files between A1 OS4 and A1200 3.1 with a parallel cable

Hi all,

I want to connect my A1 OS4 with my A1200 3.1 with a parallel cable to transfer files. In have seen the PC to Amiga tools but not Amiga to Amiga. Does anyone know if they are available?

This is all I can find:
http://www.graner.net/parbench.htm

Considering that parnet did not work from A1 to classic because it hit the hardware, I have my doubts about parbench as well.

Edit added: actually I tried this version (above) and it hit the hardware. (fail)

Too bad. Would you know if there is good way to use a linux machine to connect to the Amiga with a parallel cable?

You could try pronet, although it probably won't work either because of lack of a driver for the A1's parallel port.

Another option would be to try to use TCP/IP. There should be at least a serial port SLIP driver. I remember having an okay speed serial link between my Amiga and PC before I got a PCMCIA ethernet card (when I still had my A1200).

Is this a lot of work to setup? I assume I have to use a demo version of one of the TCP/IP packages available for 3.1? What did you use on the PC?

I honestly can't remember; it was ages ago that I set this up. I found a serial port SLIP driver for windows, and it might have been Miami on the A1200, but I've tried pretty much all of the available TCP/IP stacks for OS 3.1.

It also seems none of the parallel software tools will work on a PC with XP up. I might try a network card solution if I can get one for a decent price.

You could try serial (crossed over of course) and Term for simplicity. The serial port is much easier to work with IMHO.

As for Ethernet, I just sold my old A1200 PCMCIA ethernet card so I assume they are still kicking around. A driver is available on aminet but then you also need a TCP/IP stack and an FTP server or similar.

For cheap and quick I don't think serial can be beat.

That might indeed be a good solution. Depending on the price of a card of course.

Why all this elaborate solutions? Why not just plug your A1200's HD into your A1? Should work perfectly, AND very fast!

You only need a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor for your A1200's HD.

Or if you use a CF-to-IDE adapter on your A1200, then you can just take CF card from A1200 & plug it into a suitable (USB or IDE) adapter on your A1.
