Because of of a bug in MPlayer OS4. The only solution, while waiting for a new version, is to do as you describe : download the video and watch it afterwards.

Hmmm, I'll have to try that. Often I manage to watch a video skipping forward a second, or trying a different codec (e.g. FLV & MP4), but not always. I thought it was a bug with frame skipping.

Premise:

I use Mplayer Summer version (1.0rc3) and always choose MP4 as the video option (on SamFlex).

That said I don't remember to have experienced once the above behaviour. If you have a slow connection, or a connection that is bogged down by heavy downloads, it might be that you reach the limit (ie: the remaining part of the video is still downloading) though.
Try pressing the space bar to pause playback early on, and allow for some "buffering" (basically allow for a bigger video chunk to download before continuing playback).

I expect that he uses ClipDown! Rather than using "Auto Action", click on the down arrow, click on the "Save then Play with GetVideo", and then click on the button (which has now changed from "Auto Action" to "Save ...").

Didn't someone start a project to port/maintain mplayer for os4? Anything news on that or did nothing happen?

As Sundown said, Varthal is doing the job with help from Abalaban too.

There is a very active thread on an Italian forum where he provides test builds for him to keep an eye on bugs and performance issues on different HW.

That said I don't remember to have experienced once the above behaviour.

For me it seems to happen on "busier" sections of video (where CPU usage reaches near 100%), or higher-resolution videos, or with more CPU-hungry codecs... and is more likely to occur on a Sam440 than an AmigaOne. Since all those cases would be more likely to induce frame-skipping, I concluded that frame-skipping is broken on our MPlayer.

You can also see that higher-resolution MP4 videos (loaded from disk) tend to start out really fast (nice smooth FPS), and then quickly grind to a halt. That could be frame-skipping or something else getting gummed-up.

I would allready be happy to be able to download from you tube. Can it be done with OWB or IBrowse, how?
If not Wget? How?

Download this:
http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... ity/filetool/clipdown.lha

And you must have wget. I have it in C:
I use it with OWB. Just find the youtube clip. Copy the link(ctrl+v). You can start clipdown when you start owb for example. Choose save then play clip from the menu. And then just click on the button on clipdown.

i could not replicate your directives entirely. here is what i tried:
I reinstalled Clipdown and tried hard to follow the installation directives
- I did set the settings to "save with getvideo"
- i did copy a youtube video link to clipboard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxDi-K-y_00
- i clicked on Clipdown button. A shell appears mentioning getvideo call (RX ... etc no time to take note) a requester asks me in which directory to save
- verifying later no file was saved.

Snoopy gives me amongst others these lines:

00011 : ClipDown : FAIL = Open("videos:watch?v=gxDi-K-y_00",OLD) = [0x00000000] [199uS]
videos: is not mentioned anymore later
00076 : ClipDown : o.k. = SystemTagList("rx C:getvideo.rexx "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxDi-K-y_00" save "videos

00101 : rx : -----> RunCommand(0x153E10D9 "rx",,"C:getvideo.rexx "http://www.youtube.co",76)
the link looks abbreviated here
00113 : ARexx : o.k. = Lock("C:getvideo.rexx",SHARED) [230uS]
00148 : ARexx : FAIL = Open("env:getvideo_debug",OLD) = [0x00000000] [385uS]
00545 : rx : <----- RunCommand(0x153E10D9 "rx",,"C:getvideo.rexx "http://www.youtube.co",76) = 0 [0x00000000] [
and here too an abbreviation

stangely getvideo.cfg is not mentioned too in the snoopy trail

ENV:getVideo.cfg

After some trials with settings, all works OK now, downloading as well as streaming with the clipdown interface.

Actually I have so far only compiled a single new build of MPlayer, based on the unmodified sources from AfxGroup. I won't recommend this version (and I prefer not to provide a link to it) since it doesn't provide anything new apart for a drafted version of the GUI, moreover it requires quite a number of sobjs which makes it relatively difficult to run it. I'm working these days on fixing the most important bugs, I plan to release a new version (and officially announce it) when they will be fixed, and leave the other, minor problems plus any planned new feature for a later release.

Btw, what you think about releasing 2 versions: which use sobjs and in which everything inside ? I think many of us would prefer static bin, to avoiding that sobjs hell.

My idea was actually to release a static-only version of MPlayer. Afx has been working on releasing a sobj version of MPlayer, but I prefer static bins as well, IMHO ports using sobjs are more meaningful for those projects which generate huge statically compiled binaries, such as Timberwolf or (from what I have read on Linux) 3D engines like OGRE or Crystal Space 3D.
