Hello , i bought the CD, installed using "install" the 68 k version (which did not work well) copied the files in the PPCversion drawer to the AMIGAWRITER: drawer(s) and renamed where appropriate to existing names there.
I downloaded os4wizard.library from the Alinea site and installed it (appearing in libs)
Launching the program i first get a "Guru lmeditation" in big letters on the screen, but the little control screen appears.
Opening a new page, i get the requester, asking for author name etc. When hitting OK i get the Grim reaper. however.
It did not help. I can't make much of snoopy's output: (last lines before reaper) the first 2 lines were repeated a number of times. The font is preseent though. What doe 'isinteractive' mean ?
The install was automatic, except the PPC part: i copied the files in PPCversion manually. During the install an AMIGAWRITER assign was made. I'll try your suggestion
Searching on the site for similar complaints i noted ricossa mentioned "Amigawriter PPC Layout" crashing, same here in fact: it is the last line before grimreaper intervention. "Amigawriter PPC layout" seems to be a task generated by Amigawriter.
Your problem is that you need powerpc.library which isn't supplied with OS4 anymore, on a Sam you might as well use the 68k version, there is very little difference in speed between the two (I used both with beta versions of OS4 a few years ago) and the 68k version was more stable.
On a classic amiga AW 68k was slow even on my A4000/060 and the speed difference between that and the ppc version on a classic was enormous. 68k programs run so much faster on next gen amigas that it really makes no difference.
Also remember that the PPC version was designed for a 603 processr not a G3/G4/440EP etc.. If you could check you'd find the 68k version on a Sam is faster than the ppc version on a classic.
Amiga user since 1985 AOS4, A-EON, IBrowse & Alinea Betatester
in another thread ribdevil told me that the PPC version worked ok on his SAMflex I therefore did one more try with the PPC version, since the 68k version had freezes too often i found powerpc.library in warposemu.lha containing powerpc.library V 16.41 and also warp3DPPC.library V4.3 the guide mentions Amigawriter as a working application under the PPC emulation I did run the install and found both libraries in libs:
I got same results as described previously :( Snoopy, crashlog, the initial Guru meditations in big letters (2cm high) directly on the screen (no msg window) .
That's not quite true, at least the german locale works with ISO/€ without problems with AmigaWriter (and ArtEffect) here. So it depends on *which* locale is used.
I still think the powerup.library has some problems with different CPU architectures, because the 68k AmigaWriter works well on both my SAM440ep and my Pegasos II, but the PPC version only works with my Pegasos II.
ok i'll revert to 68 k version then. I was aware of the ISO font problem, so that's not the origin of the PPC version problems. Hope the powerPC library get fixed
Yes, the 2.2 updates can be found in Aminet. BTW I use Alinea Computers native version of the "wizard.lbrary", not the one which is distributed with Arteffect or AmigaWriter.
@cha05e90 The V2.2 patch was also on the CD, i used that one. I installed 4 versions on my HD I tested wizard.library 45.1 and 51.3 (Alinea)
2.0 68 k works with both libraries 2.2 68 k both cases: i get a very small window with no info at all, with 2 buttons, the right one closes it 2.0 PPC 45.1 big Guru meditation right on the screen crashes 51.3 no such warning with but same crashes (Amigawriter PPC layout) 2.2 PPC same results
@cha05e90 SAM 440 ep? I did not mention above, that the last info the installer for the 68k V2.2 patch gave was that i would have to reintroduce the AW serial number. When launching Amigawriter i got rhat bizarre 2 button requester instead of the normal requester asking for the serial number. Ever seen this? Does it give some clue?
Hm...did you try to temporarily switch 68k-JIT off for the install and the serial number requester? I know, that I had to enter the serial number during istall of 2.0, but aren't sure about the 2.2 update patches. Do you run AW on Workbench or did you use the infamous "StormScreenManager" for defining an own screen for it? What filesystem AW is installed onto?
I install right from the CD, so i don't get a chance to change screen. AW comes on the WB screen. Filesystem, i don't know. How do i check? How do i disable the JiT?

That sounds like almost the same which happened to me recently with Art Effect.
It turned out it had to do with the way it handles catalogs. If in Locale Prefs you have a language selected for which there is no catalog for the app (in my case Art Effect), this happens. Workaround #1: Use German or English Locale settings (assuming there are catalogs for those two delivered with AmigaWriter?). Workaround #2: Create a catalog for your preferred language (it doesn't actually have to have the strings translated, but you have to compile it with CatComp's NOOPTIM switch).
Don't know if the same applies to your AW problem, but it could be worth a try, as the two programs were created with at least some of the same tools.
@nbache Thanks for the hint. I got V2.2 68k running, looking more closely to the catalogs problem. The dutch catalog files were installed properly, but looking at Snoopy output, it appeared that although the catalog file was found, the program looked just after that in locale: for the same file.
I copied it the file where Amigawriter was looking for it and all was OK
