Read on aw.net that doom3 now is open source. Would be nice to have running om the amiga.
So, is it possible?

Not until AmigaOS4.2, which should have Gallium3D+Mesa. But once we get that, literally tons of software should be possible to port (and ports of serious programs based upon Qt should be much much faster).

we dont even have RTCW so forget about DooM3...

plus I believe RTCW is a better game than DooM3

RTCW really needs Gallium3D+Mesa too... our MiniGL is simply too primitive.

You a bit wrong here: RTCW already works on morphos , and their TiniGL almost 1:1 the same as MiniGL on os4. Its for sure pretty possible to port to aos4 even without mesa, just no one do it. I assume even on current minigl it will more or less playable in some modes (even if it will half of speed in compare with mos/tinigl).

Even sources of morphos version was released as well. Just noone worring about.

Yep that's true, the main problem would be the speed and only the speed, MorphOS users can play it on very fast G4 Mac's, the maximum speed for OS4 users are (for now limited) to the Pegasos 2 G4 platforms ..

But still, maybe with less details can be playable on a "simple" G4 1 Ghz

I might claim that I was talking about speed for RTCW, although to be honest I was being vague on-purpose

I completed RTCW on Peg2/MorphOS more than a year ago, and it was really more than playable in most places, the exception being a couple large outdoors scenes where fps could go down to about 10fps, but fortunately, there weren't that many places.

Not sure what your point is, given that was with an entirely different OpenGL implementation to OS4's.

I think the point Fab made is that if on TiniGL it was almost perfect in many places (and only in few it was reduced to some small 10 fps) on peg2 , then , on minigl/os4 on the same hardware we can expect that it will be playable just with a bit lowered settings and with 50% less FPS. Like if tinigl/mos have 40, then we will have 20-25. Which is still worht to porting.

In other words, minigl its not the real problem for RTCW, but rather no one trying to make it works for os4 from mos sources.

But for sure, when fps games slower that 25 stable fps, its already un-enjoynable

Speed difference between 3D on MorphOS versus 3D in OS4 are less than 50%

For example on a Pegasos 2 (1Ghz) with IOQuake 3 we get 30/31 FPS (OS4) while on MorphOS we get 43/45, lots of difference of course but not 50%

With the new Quake 3 binary from m3x (not yet released) i get 21/22 FPS on my Sam Flex + Radeon 9250

It just quake3 by itself optimised, but in general differences beetwen minigl and tinigl are about 50% (sometime ok 35-40, not big deal, the point is that as we all know, its slower and so will give slower results in end in compare).

@all

If anyone in interest to know about possibility to plays doom3 on amigas, check my post on aros-exec here

In brief, with proper gallium implementatino and radeonhd drivers, chances to have fast-working doom3 are high (on something like x1000 of course)
