OS4.1 extra stuff

OK, I am starting to get back into it.

Now I'd like to know:

1) How do I check if my system is up to date? Update3 on at the moment
2) Is there an automatic update system like erm...Windows updates?
3) Latest, fastest, best version of OWB I have got installed is OWB-MUI is 1.9 6.08.10 is this right?
4) Latest and most performing version of Quake1, Quake2 and Quake 3
5) Any other 3D games? I have Wipeout 2097, Freespace will they work?
6) Any other game?
7) Best word processor?
8) Best email program?
9) Does T-Zero work? Love that game!
10) How do I play DVD films?
11) I suspect that there is no way to use youtube due to flash?
12) How do I play mp3, CDs, and all the other audio files?
13) The best way to play old games, I have some adf files too
14) Time reports 12/09/11 and it's an hour late...do I have to give it a remote time server?
15) My USB keyboard starts with no lights on, then at OS4.1 boing ball spalsh I getNum Lock on then a few secs later all three, ideas?

1) You can check the about window from your Workbench menu, Update 3 contain Kickstart 53.22/workbench 53.7

2) No at the moment but there is AmiUpdate to update "automatically" your software

3) Yes exactly

4) Quake 1 is surely more performer because is less complex

5) Descent Freespace is also OS4 native so it should work fine, WipeOut 2097 is a bit complex to say, on AmigaOne it works perfectly (even with some little graphic issue that are currently in the fixing stage) but on other machine it doesn't work so fine (freeze) expecially on Sam Flex ...

So all depend on your machine and your luck

6) A lot .. check OS4depot

7) At the moment (native) i will say Cinnamon Writer

8) YAM is surely the best but if you disperately need IMAP4 you should point your mouse to SimpleMail

9) Sadly not :-/

10) To be honest not so decently on a plain Sam440 or a Sam Flex but surely you can enjoy them with a Sam460, an AmigaOne/Pegasos 2 and of course on an X1000

11) You must use ClipDown for now ...

12) We have many solution here and all solutions are perfectly fine, we have TuneNet, AmigaAMP, PlayOGG, PlayCDDA and many many others, it's up to you to choose the best or what you like more ...

13) The best solution right now is RunInUAE from our ChrisH

14) Don't know really

15) No idea, maybe be more specific

Dunno about Genetic Specis , but Heretic2 from hyperion have problems. In opposite there is better opensource port of Heretic2 (by Huno if i remember right) and that one works fine.

Yep the game was ported (and enhanced) by HunoPPC but it's GLHexen 2 - Hammer of Thyrion (not specifically Heretic 2 i think)

Do I have to apply a DMA fix for the SAM440ep by any chance?
I just remember reading about it some time ago.
I have flashed Uboot to the latest, anything else?
IDE, SATA, DMA fixes? PCI update and SAM fine tuning as found on ACube' website. Or is it all included in update3?

Update 3 contains all the "fixes" from the Hyperion site, you do not need to add any system updates.

Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 are two different games. Hexen 2 is based on the first Quake engine, while Heretic 2 on the newer Quake 2 engine. The Heretic 2 source code has not been released unfortunately.

Looking at acube's website under SAM440ep the are:

and

SAM440ep_fine_tune_tool

These are not needed are they? Just want to make sure I am not missing out on vital updates.

It would be nice to have them all centralised...just an idea.

The only updates available from ACubes site should be firmware related, and there should be instructions with each which should explain their usage.

Most likely is, the latest firmware will include patches and fixes that were addressed by ealier files.

So for firmware you mean the uboot one? I think I have got the latest one. So I won't bother downloading:

One more question...is there a way to eliminate a program from Workbench when it freezes? For example I put a DVD in and ran DVPlayer and DVPlayer froze, I could still use Workbench and I carried on running OWB but DVPlayer was right there in the middle of the screen.

After a few minutes the entire machine froze and I had to restart it.
It would be nice, if possible, to terminate the offending application so that it disappears. I am not sure if it can be done.

You can try to kill certain task with Exorcist

It's not a definitive solution as we don't have a real memory protection and so on but as interim solution more or less it works
