SAM440ep record sound
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
My boxed SAM440ep came with an audio connection (speakers) at the rear and a mike a speaker connection at the front.

I just recently have the need to record sound for a presentation i want to make;

I don't hear anything with my headphones at the front, ok at the rear.

I hope the mike connection at the front permits to record , but how can i test this. I don't need anything fancy, just want to record spoken word.

Your best option is to add an internal sound card on the PCI port since I highly doubt that you'd be able to record anything with the internal audio chipset (lack of physical in line input).

I did check the connections on my front panel, and the 2 audio (in & out) sockets are indeed not connected to anything.

But what about the J14 socket on the mainboard? It is described in the Acube schematic as "Audio in J14 (DVD/CD) "

It does not seem to be used. I guess it could be connected to the frontpanel's jack connector ? Nobody tried that yet?
Additional question: what is the type name of this female connector and its male counterpart?

And supposing i get this to work or add an audio card: what simple recording software could be suggested?

If it says that it is an input for a CD/DVD then it will be stereo line level. If you want to use a microphone on that port I think you will need to use some sort of microphone preamp.

Look in Acube page, there's a guide whith the conections of the sound expand pins in the motherboard.

In it, you see all the pins, and the signals for input and output.

I don't really remember to be honest. It probably is the CD audio in if there's no line-in as such, as it's all the same thing.

I've not really tested it to be honest, but I did test it as far as seeing if it recorded, and from memory it did just that.

The front left/right output lines are not on the internal header (J12).
So if you want to connect a Jack on the front, you need to use the signal from the Jack at the rear.
Maybe you can duplicate the signal.

To record audio, you need to connect the microphone on the pin 19 of J12 (or alternatively to pin 5 or 9).

@Elwood: thanks
As your reply is mentioned in a mail to me by Acube, i will go for this solution of course.

I guess the microphone (i have plantronics 326 headset) needs more than one connection. Can you spell that out ?
Now the J12 connector on the board is a male one, can you tell me what the name is of the corresponding female connector?

I have looked more closely into the doc of my Mini-ITX case

a Noah CRS6988B-80B
It comes with a Front I/O PCB carrying
2 USB connectors, a microphone and a speaker jack, plus a firewire connector
So the audio jacks are connected to this PCB at least.
On the PCB i find mentioned: "Azalia" & "KD9834"
I also discoverd that with the case came a number of ribbon and other cables. One of the not use cables has a female connector (2x5 , 1 'pin-in' obturated) mentioning HD AUDIO
It corresponds with a header connector jp3 on the I/O PCB
At the other end i have 2 connectors in parallel, one mentioning HD AUDIO the other AC97 Both are 2x5 pins with a different 'pin-in' obturated.

In your opinion is this PCB board doing more than just carrying signals?
Is this cable usable at all with the SAM board ?

The pin assignments for both HD Audio (Intel) and AC97 motherboard connectors are in a different order than the pin assignments shown in the SAM audio schematic. You can't just plug those connectors to your SAM motherboard audio header.

It's hard to tell. Most builtin PC audio is designed to use cheap electret microphones which require a bias voltage. Unless the manufacturer specifically states whether that bias voltage is applied at the motherboard or at the output PCB, you might need to refer to a schematic or do some testing with a multimeter. The ACube audio schematic for the SAM seems to indicate that the bias voltage is applied on the motherboard (VREFOUT) but I can't confirm that. The safe method would be (as someone else suggested) to get a mixer and connect it to one of the line input connections. Line input is a well established audio standard and is a simple 2 conductor connection.

It's probably only useful if you cut off the motherboard connector on one of the ribbon connectors and reconnect the wires to a another connector in the correct order. Even after a lot of my own research about the SAM audio, I decided that it was safer to use a sound card and not risk damaging my SAM.

Ah yes, you need to connect both pin 19 and 21.
See page 5 of the manual.

There is no connector. You need to do wiring here.
Or use a small connector like this one to pins 1 and 2 of the AC97 connector of standard cases I report here for you:
AC97
1 (mic1)
2 (GND)
3 (mic2)
4 (GND)
5 (OUT-R)
9 (OUT-L)

The connector with 2 wires attached looks like a female connector to me
It is descibed as
Quote:

2 PIN Motherboard connection
Use for power or reset switch.
power led, hard drive activity led.
16" long with bare wire leads.

anyway on my case the power reset switch has a male header pin connector.

I did find a schematic of both the AC97 and the HDAudio in this thread.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/2 ... therboard-case-audio-ac97

I do observe that Gnd & Mic_L are opposed to each other on the HD connector and Fmic and Gnd pins (19 & 21) are next to each other on the J12 connector. Since as well the J12 on the motherboard as the HDconnector on the I/O PCB are header pin connectors, soldering the wires of twp 2pin MOBO connectors ( http://www.mnpctech.com/2_PIN_Mobo_Mo ... oard_Connector_Wire.html- ) together tail to tail looks like a neat solution. I don't need the AS97 HD cable then.

What about the bias voltage however for my
headsets micro ?

Last question what does FMIC mean ?

OK i took the jump and connected a micro directly to pins 19 & 21 of J12 using two one pin female connectors a techy neighbour could provide me with.
I did try to record using AHIRecord and there was a clear visible response to me speaking. When stopping however the file undicated with tooltype NAME was there but empty.

To get this 'far' i first had to click on Audio mode. I got a warning "Cannot Allocate AHI. clicking ok I ggt a choice and picked CS4281:16bit stereo.++ (all choces are tereo)
After that the ghosted INput filed permits me to select MIc. I then use the button REc to start and end with STOP button?
As said the 'record' file is empty'
I guess the "Cannot Allocate AHI' points to a problem ?
Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my sound card. It turned out that the SPEAK: device was preventing AHIRecord from allocating AHI resources. If you are using the old SPEAK: DOS device, try removing it. The only other way I could avoid the problems you mentioned was to set AHI prefs to use my internal sound chips and have AHIRRecord use the sound card.

There is also a sound mode issue. The default sound mode ID in the AHIRecord icon TOOLTYPES doesn't exist on my system. I got the sound mode ID from the AHI Prefs and converted the ID from HEX to base 10 decimal for use in AHIRecord. The Mode ID in the AHI prefs is tricky; you see a number that is incomplete when the window is small. You need to make the AHI Prefs window large to see the whole number. When you enter the correct Mode ID in AHIRecord TOOLTYPES, it starts recording as soon as the window opens.

Even though I am able to record with a microphone, the sound levels are too low. The AHIRecord level indicators show a high level but the recorded sound is barely audible. I think I need a different microphone or to use an external mixer as others have suggested.

I would like at least to get where you got and be able to listen to recordeds sound even if not loud enough

In AHI Prefs i see for "Music Unit" a number of lines "CS4281:, a number of lines "FileSave:" and a number of lines "Unit 0:" ( that repeat the info you have when instead of choosing "Music Unit" , you choose obviously "unit 0"

I guess Unit 0: correspeonds to my CD0: ???

Q: What is the difference between both other possibilities?
SubQ1: Is it just a name or do you have to use FileSve when recording?
(I note that for FileSave 4 formats are defined, whereas no subdivision is given for CS4281)
SubQ2: If yes for SubQ1, do you have to revert to CS4281 for playing the recorded sample?

When selecting a mode i can see its hexadecimal id displayed in the lower part of the window.

In the AHIRecord Reame i note the tooltype:
- FORMAT Initial file format: AIFF_16bit, AIFF_24bit, WAVE_16bit,
WAVE_24bit or FLAC_16bit

but don't see where you would have entered the hex to decimal converted ID.
Q: can you specify ?

Open a Shell and enter "assign". At the bottom of the shell output you will see a list of mounted devices. If SPEAK: is there, you have it installed. It is part of the old OS3 speech system (SAY command etc.) that some of us have copied to OS4. It's not part of OS4. If you do have it installed just drag the SPEAK icon from SYS:Devs/DosDrivers to SYS:Storage and reboot to eliminate it.

Some programs use the low-level AHI API which prevents other programs from playing sounds at the same time. Selecting Unit0 in the Mode list redirects the low-level API to Unit0.
Select Unit0 in the "Music unit" list.
Click on the Mode Settings Cycle Gadget and select Unit0.
Select one of the CS4281 modes for Unit0 and save.

Unit0 is NOT CD0. The music units are for selecting an output device. You could (on systems with losts of PCI slot) have several sound cards installed and have each one assigned to a different unit. For example, you could have Unit0 assigned to your internal sound (CS4281) and Unit1 assigned to a sound card. If a program opens AHI Unit0 to play a sound it will play through the internal sound or if it opens AHI Unit1 it will play through the sound card. The terminology in AHI is confusing and I wish they would change it.

Filesave just makes AHI send the sounds you play to a file instead of the internal sound chips or sound card. It has nothing to do with AHIRecord so don't select filesave modes.

Setting the format to AIFF_16bit produced a file for me but no programs could play it. I used WAVE_16bit and it worked. I suggest you use WAVE_16bitfor the output format too.

Quote:

Q: can you specify ?

In the icon TOOLTYPES it is MODE=33554452.
The shell argument would be MODE 33554452.
Note that the MODE number may be different on your system.

Here are the active TOOLTYPE setting in my AHIRecord icon:
MODE=33554452 (The mode ID is different for my sound card)
INPUT=3
FREQ=44100
INPUT=0
FORMAT=WAVE_16bit
NAME=Scratch:AHIRecordTemp
TIMER=1
GAIN=50
ALC=NO

When I double-click the AHIRecord icon, it opens the window, the level meters are active and it is recording. The TOOLTYPE "INPUT=1" selects the Mic on my system but check that it is selected when the window opens.

I'm not an AHI expert and am just telling you what I know from experimenting with AHIRecord and AHI. If SPEAK: is not what is blocking AHIRecord from accessing AHI then I'm not sure what the cause is.

thanks for a very helpfull answer.

At this point i can create a .wav file easily, but i must have created some other problem in my system. A file i could play with songplayer
Datas:Music/Trauermarsch.wav
does not give me sound anymore
Trying to play it with Multiview i get the message
"Geen handler naam, segment lijst of poortadres opgegeven"
(No handlername, segmentlist or portaddress given)

Correction: the above only appears when i leave the AHIRecord window open.
All works OK except that i can confirm the audio level is really low.

Thanks again for your help
