lately I notice that unzipped stuff using UnArc seems to be not fully visible (icon in dull shade & won't open when double clicked) until I view the icon information and resave it. Only then is the icon usable. Is there some setting I unclicked somehow, any ideas?
The icon dull in shade bit suggests that it's a deficon. (ie transparent) But it should still work if you click on it, what type of icon is it you are talking about?
Once you open information and save it becomes a real icon. How it works then will depnd on if you changed anyting before saving.
Downloaded 1941 Extreme deluxe to a have alook and the mainicon looks fine to me, but the readme icon is a png icon, so will only work if you install the png_im from os4depot.

reviving this old thread..exhale hmm noticing all downloaded files doing the same thing ? ok I'm going to install this png_im to see if it makes a difference.
BTW, can't you save the type with deficons and make it available immediately?
Chris
my issue it's all downloaded files/folders & it doesn't make a difference what type of icon it is. I'm gonna try doing what Andy said and see if it helps...like i said this is more a nuisance than a problem.
@328gts It sounds like OS4 has somehow become broken, because it should NEVER act the way you describe:
If DefIcons recognises an iconless file, then it should get the correct "virtual" icon. Although semi-transparent, the icon should behave exactly like a real icon, e.g. so that double-clicking on it will open the file as normal. Snapshotting the icon creates a real icon, but as this icon is identical to the "virtual" one it should not behave any differently.
Since there is a difference in behaviour, something has gone very wrong somewhere. I have no idea what. You may have to either live with the problem, or backup & reinstall OS4.
You could see if some program in WBStartUp is causing problems, by rebooting with the Left Shift key held down (WBStartUp should be ignored in this case).
I think you have probably installed something that installs a custom deficons config. try 'reinstalling' by inserting your latest OS4 CD and opening a shell and entering:
copy CD0:system/prefs/env-archive/sys/def#? envarc:sys force
This will replace the deficons prefs file and icons with the default original setup. Any custom icons you have added will still be there but may not work which should help you track down what caused the problem.

@Severin I doubt that will work, but there is no harm in retrying. Also, he will need to reboot after doing what you say, before testing whether it helps.

tried and still same issue. I don't know what's 'broken' as I have the same end user and up to date beta paritions that you have on my X1000 and this issue happens on both
time for a full re-install i guess and go from there

That's really strange. This means the problem is due to something shared by both installations of OS4. Do you know what you are sharing? e.g. third-party programs, OS4 settings, or something else?
Severin asked me via IRC to post this text here because he is having trouble making the post himself:
ok. I think I know part of your problem... I filed a BZ for it ages ago but nothing seems to have been done.
Sometimes if you use the auto tooltype like I do from dopus the first file in an lha archive is not extracted.
I just tried it with the new warpdt prefs archive and the first file is the drawer icon which wasn't extracted. so sometimes you will get a deficon when you shouldn't. still don't know why it doesn't work for you though, it's fine here on my beta partition.
btw. silly question I know but do you have separate kicklayouts for your FC and beta kickstart files?
i had a problem where everything i unzipped with DOpus had an underscore in the file name but then found out the problem was not with DOpus but with the version of UnArc I was using.
I do have separate kickstart boot configurations for both bootbale partitions (+ Linux Debian parttition) that get chosen at boot up prior to prior to booting WB
