File system switching and formatting

I've been trying to switch my Telecom: partition back from JXFS to SFS/00. But I only get a message that the volume is full and have no choice but to cancel when I try to format it.

Later I tried switching that partition to FFS and I was allowed to format the partition after I did that.

I thought to myself: "Great. Now I can switch back to SFS/00." But once again when I tried to format it under SFS, it said the volume was full, and would not allow me to format it.

This is all occasioned by the Greek font problem I'm having with MUIOWB (in another thread) and I was hoping to get bookmarks working in Timberwolf, which won't install or work under JXFS.

Let's just say that me and my Amiga are not getting along well lately.

Have you changed the DOSType in MediaToolKit (or whatever it's called) and rebooted?

Hi,

I think that your size partition is beyond the limit of SFS, no ?
For example, i f you sfs/02, the limit is about a bit less than 1000Gb.
When you want to format a partition with a too big size, you obtain the error you have.

Since a lot of months without an amiga to love, I was lost.
Now I feel happiness again with a Sam Flex 800 .

Aha! That sounds reasonable.

Is 300GB too big for SFS/00?

SFS\00 is limited to 128 GB.
SFS\02 is limited to 1 TB.
FFS2 is limited to 2 TB minimum (can be as much as 128 TB with larger block sizes).

Also, when switching from JXFS to SFS, remember to change the block size to 512 bytes. JXFS supports other block sizes, but SFS does not.

EDIT: I was wrong about what JXFS supports - see below.

Thanks, everybody. Since I have a 300GB partition, I went back to JXFS. Interesting, though, that it works with other block sizes. I had kept it at 512 when I first set it up.

Hopefully, the Friedens brothers will be able to get Timberwolf bookmarks working regardless of the filesystem.

According to the author and Hyperion, both SFS and JXFS only support 512 bytes blocks. If either of them allows you to use another size, it's neither supported nor condoned.

Only FFS supports other block sizes.

Niels

I'd recommed you to split up the partition into e.g. three 100GB partitions and use SFS\0. Then you have a file system which is supported by (at least some of) PartitionWizard's repair tools, and as an added advantage, you will only have to restore a third as much data from your backup when you get your first read error.

Plus it is the most well-tested of the three (SFS\0, SFS\2 and JXFS).

Best regards,

Niels

Aargh, you are right. What I should have said was that JXFS supports 'unlimited' partition sizes with 512 block size, while SFS2 is limited to 1TB. (I am using large than 1TB using a 1024 block size, but as this is not recommended I really need to switch to JXFS for my huge partition.)

Niels,

Thanks for the thought on splitting up the partition. I've done that now and gone back to SFS/00. Unfortunately, when I tried to install my bookmarks from Firefox at work, it still won'[t let me finish the "restore" process.

Have you installed the RANDOM: device?
(DEVS:DosDrivers/RANDOM --> Activate=1 in the tooltypes)

Apart from what is written in the docs of TW i still need the RANDOM device to be installed and active for bookmarks to work (SFS partition)

Yes. the Random device is in the Devs drawer and Activate=1.

But I just re-read the ReadMe, an d it says to delete everything in the CurrentUserConfig drawer if there is trouble saving bookmarks. I'll give that a try and get back here with the results of that.

I had my hopes up. After getting rid of the stuff mentioned above, TW was able to load my Firefox bookmarks.

But the bookmarks did not survive a program shutdown and restart.

Sorry for getting your hopes up

I just rechecked and actually am using RC3.

I know i installed RC4 but pretty fast went back to RC3 because of that bookmarks problem.
I tried evrything but it just didn't want to save the bookmarks (although it did fine with RC3).

I am now waiting for the next release to check and see if it will bookmark again...until then it's RC3 for me.

Same here. EDIT: I found bookmarks did work with RC4 once RANDOM was enabled.

Are you *sure* that you left Timberwolf enough time to shut down? Even after the window disappears it can still be heavily using the CPU for a while (doing something or other). Get a CPU docky (I suggest CPUTemp).

Otherwise, you could try switching back to RC3 as Raziel suggests.

That didn't work for me unfortunately.
I had RANDOM installed when switching to RC4, TW cache on a SFS00 partition and all, no score

There should be some sort of quit splash window

This is the main problem i ran into when installing add-ons.
The little "reboot now" on those add-on windows will madly crash TW here, due to the fact that the reloaded instance of TW will not wait for the former to properly quit. (not sure if it is the RAM draining -512MB here- or TW doesn't like a second instance of it's own)

I for one take a peek at the RAM used after quitting.
When it has gone down ~200 MB i'm save TW has quit
