Radeon 9259 PCI - Radeon HD 6450 comparison - Sam440

We have uploaded a video with a comparison of a Radeon 9250 PCI and a Radeon HD 6450 (PCI-E to PCI Bridge).

This test Shows a Little game Scene of a game which is currently in development.

Video:

Screenshot of the game:

This test is to show what performance boost can bring a Radeon HD card on a Sam440 with PCI bus. A Radeon HD card can increase the performance extreme and is prepared for the upcoming Warp3D drivers and Gallium3D in future.

We have also tested it on a Radeon 5450 PCI Edition and it works also very good (Club 3D PCI Edition), the Card has the same PCI-E to PCI chip.

The Performance boost with compositing stuff is very, very good.

Our Tests (Workbench 1920x1080):
Radeon 9250, PCI:
Windows Mode: at Start: 22 Fps, at End: 39 Fps
Fullscreen: 1920x1080: at Start: 1 Fps, at Ende 14 FpS

Radeon HD 6450 PCI-E (PCI Express to PCI Bridge):
Window Mode: at Start: 74 Fps, at End: 96 Fps
Fullscreen: 1920x1080: at Start: 31 Fps, at End 50 FpS

Note: if the video is not very smooth, then it is a Problem of our recording. In Original it is smooth at least if vSync is activated.

We also want to release this test Scene as soon as possible to test it on your Systems (just make the Scene a Little bit longer).

P.S. We have released Balance Blox now, it is available here:

@imagodespira

Thanks for posting the video. I did some quick analysis of the numbers, and the performance increase is even better than I would have expected given that it's "just" a lowly 6450.

I discourage people from buying low-end Radeon HD cards (for PCIe capable machines), and I still stand by that advice. However, compared to the old Radeon cards that people are used to, even te low-end cards have something to offer.

thanks for posting, awesome info!

great to see that Sam440 owners can also enjoy modern RadeonHD cards now too

Wow - nice work to all involved! Smooth parallax scrolling on a graphics card. No chipset magic required. Now replaced with compositing magic. :)

It would be interesting to see how this compares to a Sam460 in the following ways:
- same card in a PCI slot with the PCI->PCIe adaptor
- same card in the PCIe slot

I assume the test is done on a 66Mhz PCI slot of a SAM440ep-FLEX?

I think I have not seen anyone reporting using SAM440ep-mini + RadeonHD combination. Especially not with dual display setup (M9 also operating).

@KimmoK

Well the bus speed is irrelevant the graphic is stored in the graphic card, not in system memory, this eliminates the need to copy the image over the slow bus for etch frame.

Assuming that you're XE doesn't have the DMA fix, it should work in the 33Mhz slots with a PCI-PCIe adapter without problems.
