Go here and grab the latest SFS, then go there and read yourself into how to install it.

I have never regret switching to it, although the PPC native FFS was very temopting, well, i didn't give in

Good luck

I tried last night with no success...

I reckon the problems could be (to be investigated this weekend):
-- HDD Failure (but booting from CDRom should not freeze ?)
-- Dust (they must be enough in there to use as a duvet !)
-- Battery discharge (has been replaced a couple of Months ago only !)
-- Power Supply Failure (True it has been quite noisy lately !)
-- Loose Cable (but the machine hasn't been moved for a while...)

--- Any other ideas ?

Jerry

I find it hard to believe it would be the battery.

You opened a brand new blister pack at last months 3cag meeting for that battery.

Chris_Y and I went all over peterborough searching for those batteries just a month earlier.

Are we nearly there yet ?

Just my opinion, but you probably shouldn't keep your cats in the computer case. Kitty litter in the case fan is bad for the bearings. (don't ask how I know that)

Good Luck with the repairs!

Never ever trust the battery situation. I have had to replace batteries a few weeks after install, I guess it may point as to how long they have hung on the hook in the shop. Go back to basics and try another battery. From memory this is something to do with the actual PPC setup requiring constant power (may be wrong).

Will any CR2032 do the job ?

Yes, it will, but make sure you:

1) Wipe any fingerprints off the battery with a Kleenex before you install it;
2) Check the contacts inside the battery holder for corrosion;
3) Don't use metal tweezers/pliers to hold the battery, even for an instant, you will short circuit it and shorten its life.

Remember you will need to reset UBoot to at least minimum specs to boot into AOS4, from there make your first visit is to Prefs/UBoot and changed the parameters you need.

What is the command to save the current UBoot Settings so I can "re-input" them ?

Thanks.

If you are about to change your battery there is no point. Just do it. Reboot your Amiga and go to prefs/Uboot and change your settings there. Hit esc and enter the Uboot bootup if you need to interupt the boot sequence. Otherwise, I think the command is printenv to see what your settings currently are.

Care to name the hard drive manufacturer?

Both HDD were bought from www.aria.co.uk

One of the faulty HDD is a Seagate, and I think the second one is a Samsung...

Wooohooooooooooo !

It works again !

-- I replaced the battery, then reconnect the CD Drive (though the DVD Combo Drive was fine, the cable from the CD Drive must have "disconnected itself" during one of the "3 Cag trip"...).

This allowed me to boot the OS4Upd4 CD from the CDRom Drive (instead of the DVD Combo Drive)... Then using the Partition Wizard to fix the 2 errors on the HDD... And now it seems to be working fine !

I will now start backing-up everything, then maybe next week or the week after I might try to install it as SFS.

And a month later... Again HDD Corrupted !
And a few other problems occured (with not always the same error message)...

I change AGAIN the battery and it seems to work a bit better as I managed to boot the Amiga... But after a short while it froze with various HDD Corruption -- 2 HDD.... Always the same having the errors !

I wonder now if the Power Supply is not becoming a bit "weak"... It's an OLD 300 W ATX Power Supply.

Can I change it to a new ATX 350W Power Supply like this one ?
Is there any consideration I need to be aware off ?

Thanks.

Good if it's solved. Just from experience:

Take Your HD for a run in a (sadly) PC. Then try back.
I had to change mine but in a shop it worked. Well, buyed a bigger one and it Rocks!

Thanks for Boogie for that!

Oops, didn't read all, This A1 has a 340 W Max Supply and works well. Just gave an 200W for free for a friend and he told me that it is not enough for the graphics card and the pc. Sil-Card here works like a charm too.

Too cheap imho. Might lack quality (seriously, been there, cost me 60GBP to send the mobo to Eyetech and back to discover faulty PSU that could power some older PCs but not P4 ones and A1).
