OS4 file reading problems
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Hi, help needed.
Sometimes my OS4 hard disk makes weird noises and right after a message of file reading problems appear.
What's the best software so I could verify/repair my OS4 hard disk?

Thanks in advance

It depends on the file system you used on it. The only tool still supported is PartitionWizard but it does not support every filesystem available.

*But* if your hard drive is making weird noises than it's probably because it's dying and no software tool will allow you to reliably repair it. The only advice I would give to you is to make a backup and buy a new one

The file system used in my OS4 it´s SFS 1.286.
I´m already formating a 32GB CF card so can backup the files but since the start of formating 1st partition of 27GB, 9 hours ago, only 21% are formated.
Why it´s formating so slownly (21% of 27GB in 9h)??.. It´s that normal?
What´s the best file system to use with a Sam440ep 667Mhz and OS4.1.4?

It sounds like you are doing a full format, which is not needed. Format the card with a "quick format" instead, it will be a lot faster.

I will replace but first I need to format my CF card so could backup my files.

What´s the best file system to use with a boot partition with 2GB and another non boot partition with 27GB to a Sam440ep 667Mhz and OS4.1.4?

For boot partition IMHO the best it's SFS,
for the other partition if you need support for
files >2G (file size, not partition size) I suggest
SFS\2 if you doesn't need big file support maybe use SFS

I have had similar problem with both JXF and SFS/2, the problem occured after lots of copy/delete operations. I eventually got read error as well. I copied whatever I managed to save and had to reformat the disk and everything was ok.
The SFS and JXF use a ".recycled" map where it puts everything you delete into, and when harddisk eventually is full it has to delete from ".recycled" drawer to make room for the new data. I Suspected it to be a fault in this stage, because now later I have deleted the contents in .recycled drawer and it has never happened since.

I don't think that's right.

As I understand it, the ".recycled" drawer is a fixed size (on all of my partitions it's about 1% of the disk). It will never get bigger than that and the filesystem can not gain more disk space by deleting stuff from the ".recycled" drawer.

What you are describing is a "Trashcan", which is a conventional directory that expands and contracts as you add or delete files from it.

Have you adjusted this in some prefs settings, because on my SFS partition I have about 10% of partitionsize in my .recycled drawer.

No it is not I am not using the Trashcan.
There is a similar thread on Hyperions forum.

The difference between .recycled and Trashcan.

.recycled is deleted files, but Trashcan is just a directory.

You can delete from .recycled but you don't need too, normally its hidden so you want even know about it. If the files is destroyed it diapers from there, this will only happen if you full up your disk.

Even if the files in .recycled are deleted they have a size, until they are destroyed.

you possibly have a faulty sector on your hard drive, make a back up asap and replace the drive

I just noticed you did say you deleted “.recycled” drawer that might pretty bad thing to do, as the filesystem needs that drawer when you delete files, if you just deleted the content of the drawer it might have gone a little better I think.

I have changed ali my amigaa from SFS to ffs. IF there is a problem wit SFS, toi can't do anything, nyt ffs problema has always been solvable.
