Sam440ep video output question
Amigans Defender

I've got a Sam440ep (non-flex) to use while I'm away from my own machine, but I'm not getting any picture out of the M9 chip's VGA output (I'm using ACube's VGA cable plugged on the internal header). The DVI output seems to be working but as my monitor doesn't support DVI, I need to get the VGA working. Does the Sam need activating/switching the VGA output somehow?

Thanks for help or ideas.

Also, there is nothing to enable. Video output should go out on VGA and DVI from the machine start.

Strange, as this is apparently not the case here I connect my PC notebook to the same monitor using the same VGA cable I'm now plugging to the VGA output on the Sam. Although the notebook displays fine, the Sam gives no signal.

@Antique

No converter at hand sadly. Just a generic DVI----VGA cable, which doesn't work.

The Sam440 needs a SPECIAL DVI->VGA adaptor (normal ones tend not to work, at least not very well). ACube supplied one with Sam440s. If you don't have one, then I'm not sure where you can get one.

Coincidentally, we're just trying the same thing at the ANT meeting, and we got NOTHING displayed using a standard DVI->VGA adapter, but my special ACube DVI->VGA adapter worked fine.

Even with the adapter the Sam440's VGA output tends to be a bit fuzzy, so I highly recommend using a DVI monitor (crystal sharp).

Just guessing... I'm wondering whether the signal coming
out of your SAM could somehow be out of range or otherwise
incompatible with what your monitor wants from VGA.

Have you tried setting your SAM to very conservative and
manual screenmode (800x600? no DDC?) and see if that will
display via VGA?

If you can get it working, then you can test your way into
more agressive modes.

Good luck,

PJS

The machine was lent to me and came with no adaptor. I still may have one at home, so as the worst thing I'll need to wait until after X-mas.

That is possible. When I get access to a better monitor to be able to at least display something, I'll try tweaking the screenmode settings.

Also be aware that while the output may be sharper from DVI, the VGA output can handle higher bitrates. E.g. I remember when I tried, the DVI output could not handle 1920×1080×32, but the VGA output could, at least with +RB set.

Niels

Nbache :
Could you explain me please this "+RB" setting ?
What is it and where to setup it ?

On my X1000, the Radeon9250 VGA display is not very accurate on some screen areas (27" monitor in 1920x1080 32bits)

Thank you by advance
Guillaume

@zzd10h

It's set in the tooltypes for the particular monitor in DEVS:Monitors. For example:

MODE=1600x1200@60+RB

Thank you guys !

Just tested +RB on my R9250 and it seems that fuzzy areas are gone.

The RB (+ or -) can also be set in the edit window which opens when you edit one of your screenmodes on the Monitors tab of ScreenMode prefs.

Niels
