Ibelive it uses the envvar / assign in order

That is:

Check for envvar HOME
if exists use destination as "homedir"
if not check for HOME: assign
if exists use HOME: assign as "homedir"

I prefer the assign approach (assigned to sys:home ) as differeing applications treat the HOME variable as containing either a unix (/home) or amiga (HOME:) path, which a lot more of a pain than creating the non standard but easily added assign.
