As a consequence, applications targeting Update 1 and beyond no longer need the "compliance" code, but apps designed to run under lesser OS versions still require it.

One advantage that AppPath has over AppDir is that being an environment variable it can be retrieved from the AutoInstall script this is really convenient both for the developer writing the autoinstall script and the user running it because he is not required to specify the previous installation path...
As a consequence all my software still have this "compliance" code. It really irritate me when I'm updating a software to be required to re-run the complete installation process including specifying the installation path: after all I'm updating not re-installing!

Both are environment variables.

For example:

6.AmigaOS4:> getenv Apppaths/AmiDVD
DH0:Utilities/AmiDVD
6.AmigaOS4:> getenv Appdir/AmiDVD
DH0:Utilities/AmiDVD

Yes you are right but I thought it was not recommanded to look at what nor how AppDir handler was storing its database. If it is publically accessible then yes AppDir variables can be used as a replacement of the AppPath.

They are true environment variables, so there no reason you can't access them, set notifications on them etc. Just makes sure you always access them via GetVar and not by accessing the files themselves.

Ofcourse that doesn't mean you should *remove* your 'compliance code', just that you don't need to go to the trouble of adding it in new software if that software is only available for 4.1 and above.

So is there a way for me to have new versions of applications like sketchblock, cinnamon writer, or AmigaAmp get updated automatically as they become available through AmiUpdate?
If so, that would be awesome!

Rigo allready answered this but I thinjk he answered a slightly different question...

I'm interpreteing your question as "given that the database has been correctly updated and the update is available, how do I have it automatically installed".

The solution to that might be

Start AmiUpdate from your s:network-startup script by adding something like

RUN >NIL: <NIL: AppDir:AmiUpdate >NIL:

IN Prefs/Updates preferences set scan active servers on startup (middle check box first tab) *or* set a schedled update using the gadgets at the top of the first tab.

That will offer you a list updates soon after they come available. You'll still have to make an explicit choice to install them.

You might also want to set the start iconified option if you do this (General Tab).

In the specific case of SketchBlock and ProAction I have stopped updating the database temporarily untill I write a proper autoinstall as I supsected that many people appeared to be downloading lots of times and not installing the update. Probably for 2.6

Yes, highlight the update and select "ignore update". (that might only ignore the current update and not future updates though)

Not just stopping the current update, but how to stop updates in the future is the question i have

If it's really something you don't use, you can delete the env-vars in AppPaths/AppDir. They will recreate next time you run it.

You could maybe move and remap it (check the menu) to a place which is not in your path? It will still get updated, but you won't be running it.

If you need the old version to be available to run, you might rename that to something else, so AmiUpdate doesn't recognize it and only checks the redirected copy.

Niels

i was not really "having" a problem but did not find how to translate "que je voulais poser"
In my original mail i was just suggesting some improvements to the AmiUpdate interface that could or not be taken up by the Amiupdate team, of which this "problem", was a part (and "problem " also was not the best wording choice)
in short these suggestions were
1 be able to see easily to what application updates you are subscribed to
2 be able to check that against the database, say in one singel listview, so that you candecide what else you want to be updated regularly
3 be able to uncheck an aplication for further updates
4 have the date next to the version available in the interfaces you get

So in fact having one database listview (as on the sit) completed with date as interface and with one checkbox per subscribed application

or something similar

Well, being able to disable updates for a component is not something that is planned, as it is too destructive. I can imagine the support queries now, when users start moaning that their applications are not being updated because they forgot they turned it off completely.

This is why the "Ignore this update" will only skip the current version, not all of them.

Just updated MUI and Petunia via AmiUpdate.
Following a hard reset, and power down, I cannot switch screenmodes from my 6850 to 9250. When I try, amidock then my backdrop disappears, but then the process stops. I can still see my drive icons and the mouse cursor still moves however I cannot open drives or drawers and the context menus do nothing. I have to reset to get back to a normal 6850 workbench.

Any ideas?

X1000 all updates.

This is not isolated to switching from 6850 to 9250, it occurs whenever the screenmode is changed.

Something in Amidock does not like the new updates.
By shutting it down, I am able to switch screen modes.
Later today I will begin to try and isolate the program link or docky that causes the issue.

I have the same config than you (HD6670 + R9250) and a lot of dockies, no screenmode changes problem here.

@zzd10h
Interesting.
The only thing that may be different is that I have CPUDock, GFXDock and X1Temp in a small subdock.
Also I notice that when I hover the cursor over top left of the screen I get the CPUDock popup and when I hover cursor on RAM Disk I get the GFXDock popup. This behaviour never caused any screenmode change issues before the recent updates so I do not know if it is related.

I can reproduce the issue by adding a subdock to my main dock and putting CPUDock, GFXDock, RamDock and X1kTemp in it.

Can you try that?

Seeing as this isn't an AmiUpdate problem, how about starting a new thread with a relevant topic?
