I'm currently helping a brand new user to our favourite OS come to grips with it's operation and during the basic use of Workbench help he asked me how to install the Trashcan as Amigakit had not installed one for him?
As I've never once had use for a Trashcan I need some advice on which third party Trashcan is easy to setup and use for a newb to AmigaOS.
The Trashcan is just a drawer, its useless, If I remember correct there are some more advanced trashcan app icons on aminet, but they do not work as they do in windows.

guys I realize the points you made BUT this new user wants a Trashcan i.e Recycle Bin so if there is a third party app that someone can recommend then I'll pass that on else I'll just tell him simply no.
@ broadblues
but isn't that just for the specific formatted partition only then? This new user is looking for a global type RecycleBin sort of thing for the whole system

Yes it is.
Is this guy using sfs ? in that case don'ty forget the .recycled hidden drawer, which is much more useful than the trashcan.
Global recyling drawers require files to me moved / coppied from volume to volume, which is slow.
I disagree, for a new user .recycled on SFS and JXFS is not a good idea as no directory structure is preserved. A trash folder is far better unltil they have learnt where things should go.
.recycled is ok for retrieving an accidentally deleted picture, document etc. but useless if a drawer has been deleted or more than 300 files...

As well as, if you have 3 files with the same name, they'll all be over written by the most recent being moved there, unless the "d" or is it "e" protection bit is set, in which case it can't be overwritten to a file there already.
Support Amiga Fantasy cases!!! How to program: 1. Start with lots and lots of 0's. 10. Add 1's, liberally. "Details for OS 5 will be made public in the fourth quarter of 2007, ..." - Bill McEwen Whoah!!! He spoke, a bit late.
guys PLEASE DO NOT install AmiCygnix and Email programs on the main SYS folder as it bloody practically fills up the entire partition space! This new user I'm helping had a volume full error on his SYS: and no wonder when you've got both AmiCygnix and email folders there...seriously the SYS partition should only be for SYS programs..rant over
I've found that some users use windows wastebasket for file storage. Then they nag if they loose some files. 8-P

Next time, before asking help for a new Amiga user, it will be interesting to know if he is using AmigaOS 3.x or if he is using amigaOS 4.x in order to let expert users to suggest the better option, to explain if he can use simple trashchan, third party trashcan like Benchtrash, or formatting SFS with the flag recycle bin isssued on.
it's mostly AmigaOS4 users that come here, so unless some one say some thing else it's highly likely it's AmigaOS4 that is talked about.
In this case I he most depend on AmigaOS4 compatibility whit old software, so the same type of answers is likely. (AmigaOS4 doesn't have a better trashcan.)

A trash program should patch the Delete() function to trap deletes from the WB or through the command line. It's not that difficult to do. I don't know if some proposed programs work like this.
