Anyone interested in updating SuperBase? I mailed the owners and got some interest back.

I used to use SuperBase (SBase4/Retail Escort). It was a pretty good database program. Mr. Hardware was going to make an OS4 version, but the owner passed away.

I would be interested in an updated PPC version.

An OS4 version would be great. I tried the existing 68K version a little while back but some things went wonky. Would love to see it updated.

I have the massive SBase Professional 4 box on the shelf too, but I'm too much an SQL guy by now to want to bother with the non-standard query language of SBase.

Best regards,

Other versions have been completely updated but looks like they don't have any coders to update for Amiga. Am waiting to see if I get an answer from Amigakit. They would be the logical first choice. We can probably see what the modern version looks like on Linux. Lattest version looks to be called SIMPOL.

It's more a programming language with crossplatforms ability now. See http://www.simpol.com/documentation/

I don't think many people would use a native version of SBase now that we have MUIbase or even AAMP to develop with. Maybe the very old SBase source code should just released for free to the community.

I have never used SuberBase so can't really comment on it but I have started to use MUIBase. One of the main reasons for that is that you can get MUIBase on Linux (and Windows if you use that) and the potential for cross platform usability was a definite plus for me.

@Elwood,
I was told the code for SB4 was very old and mostly basic. It really needs to be updated to be fast and serious.

I would, MUIbase is lacking a simple list view. I use databases for storing info about my collections, cd's, dvd's, ebooks etc. where being able to search or filter to report a specific author, artist, actor, drirector etc. and see a list of results is what I need.

MUIBase is far too complicated for the average home user for maintaining simple databases. Superbase has the simplicity but also vast power if needed.

Yes, SIMPOL is, nowadays. I was referring to the language of the Amiga SBase/Superbase products.

I have even less use for SIMPOL than for SBase, when there are things like MySQL, PHP etc. available.

@All,

I would think it's possible both ways, It can either be an improved SBase4 with more features or A simpol port.

Have had no response from Amigakit on this so I pointed the folks at SuperBase to them.

There was an OS4 port of superbase started way back in 2004 but it never got anywhere and the beta versions I tried timed out in about a month iirc. Last activity in the change log was feb 2005.

I bought what I believe is the last official release of SBase4 Professional. Here is some info from the readme:

Quote:
March 31, 2000 --
Changed to version V1.36a
Recompiled using SAS/C 6.58
Fixed OS 3.5 printing bug.
Applied Y2K fixes
Fixed various printing bugs.
Cleaned up the whole source code and fixed lots of stuff.
FormDesigner has been bugfixed and reworked. Fixed OS 3.5 startup-crash.

I'm not sure but I think the author of SView was contracted by Mr. Hardware to do the update. Check out project #7 on this Web page:

No. I'm keeping it because (as Severin pointed out) it's easier to use for simple databases than modern alternatives.

Does 1.36a work ok on os4? I only have 1.3h from tosec and the no longer working early OS4 ports as my original floppies died years ago. Do you know where I can get the update?
