need to install another 2 old HDs into my X1000 BUT....

so looks like I'm finally gonna have some time to setup some old hard drives with tons of family pics in my X1000 this holiday but since their both from an old XP box I'm assuming their NTFS.

question 1: I'm thinking to wait until my OS4.1FE arrives from AmigaKit (just got email yesterday it was shipped)to install these drives but do you guys think I should install them now before the major update?

question 2: I'm praying that either way OS4.1 will recognize the drives right off the bat as I can't reformat them! Absolutely can't afford losing any data on the drives as their 2TB and 80GB full of pics and I currently have no way of backing up all that data

Only the massstorage driver is ATM able to automount MBR partitions so unless these are USB harddrives you will need to use a tool like MountDOS or GiggleDisk to create a DOSDriver for use with the mount command.

Also since neither of these tools know about NTFS3G you need to set the FileSystem and DosType fields to the correct values manually:

FileSystem = L:NTFileSystem3G
DosType = 0x4E544653

And you might also want to add the following line if it's missing:

Activate = 1

hmm you just reminded me that I can actually just buy the USB housing and convert these into USB drives instead of mounting them full time into my X...will give this some thought as perhaps it's the safest way to go

Perhaps one of these.

I have one and it works. Don't know about NTFS, but it handles all my HDs.

interesting will have a look but saw a USB holder that can be plugged into my router so they can be accessible by all my network systems which is cool

It hurts deep inside me to read such a statement. Please, before anything else, get another hard disk or two and arrange to make a backup of all those pictures to store somewhere else before disaster strikes!

Remember, disaster can take many forms, from a disk developing an unrecoverable error to your home catching fire or being burglarized.

You really don't want to know how it feels to lose all of your photo memories (I don't either, but I have some friends who got to know the hard way, and it is not nice, believe me).

Best regards,

Niels

I hear ya loud & clear Neils! that's why I'm going the safe route & first thing I'm gonna do is make backups.

ya know all this digital data is really just dust in the aior until you actually physically print the darn things out and physically hold them! People just don't realize the importance of truly understanding that ALL their data can just disappear.

If you ever decide to add HDD to your X1000, be prepared for a shortage of power leads. My X1000 had none spare.

I contacted Amigakit and they sent me the leads that should have come with my modular PSU.

@pvanni

that's interesting

@ ddni

sounds very strange Amigakit would do that? anyhow no worries here as I've got plenty to spare.
