Radeon HD Southern Island & debug kernel
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
Hi,
Is another user of RadeonHD Southern Island is able to boot OS4 on the kernel.debug ?

Since I changed my HD6670 for a R7-250X I'm no more able to boot on my debug.kernel on my X1000.
I used it, before, sucessfully to use my serial debug wire but now, under 4.1.6 & FE :

-Kickstart seems to load well
-I see the pre-workbench splash-screen (black background and Final Edition in center)
-after, I don't see my workbench, the screen turns to total black.
-I listen the OS4 jingle.

In my X1000 kicklayout, I checked that I have RadeonHD.chip both under 4.1.6 & FE

MODULE Kickstart/kernel.debug
...
MODULE Kickstart/graphics.library.kmod
MODULE Kickstart/PCIGraphics.card
MODULE Kickstart/RadeonHD.chip v2.7 on 4.1.6, v2.10 on FE
MODULE Kickstart/ATIRadeon.chip

Is anybody else encounters this problem ?
Thank you

I have never messed with the debug.kernel.

Happy to test for you if you send me the instructions...

Thank you !

1) save your Sys:Kickstart/Kicklayout as Sys:Kickstart/Kicklayout.BKP

2) Duplicate your Configuration from "; Configuration name" until last MODULE at the end of file

3) In this duplicate configuration rename

-"LABEL AmigaOS_4.1_Final_Edition" to "LABEL AmigaOS_4.1_Final_Edition_Debug"

-"MODULE Kickstart/kernel" to "MODULE Kickstart/kernel.debug"

4) Now you should have 2 configurations in the same Kicklayout file.
AmigaOS_4.1_Final_Edition and AmigaOS_4.1_Final_Edition_Debug

5) Cold reboot and you should be able to select the Debug configuration at boot.

Thank you ;)

Just in case somebody gets into trouble:

Before rebooting with your changed Kicklayout, check to make sure there is exactly one empty line between the two configurations, and no empty lines anywhere else.

Best regards,

Niels

Whilst it shouldn't be locking up like that (all fine here but I use a different card) it's worth noting that there is no need to use, or even much benefit from, the debug kernel for serial debugging. Unless you are trying to debug a system issue.

Use of Debug.kernel seems to be recommended here for serial debug :

yes serial debugging for AmigaOS4.1 developers and AmigaOS4.1 beta testers, not for every one else.

Debug kennel should be slower, then normal kernel, due to printed debug information on the serial port.

Yes, I know but I occasionaly develop some OS4 programs even if I'm not a developper.

And now, I have to find a freeze problem that neither Sashimi nor Serial with standard kernel seems to see.

Thx

problem solved.

In my debug kicklayout configurations, I had RadeonHD.chip.debug.

This module wasn't updated since v1.2 and therefore doesn't support SI cards.

I just replaced it with standard RadeonHD.chip and it works !

I don't remember why I added this .debug module...
