Catweasel MK4 Wanted
Just popping in

Hi, I'm trying to find out where I can buy something called a Catweasel MK4.

I'd like to be able to read and write disks form the Amiga, C64, Apple II etc.

I have many disks here from when I used to work for CBM and I'd like to try to archive these to CD / DVD before they are all lost / unreadable.

I think a modern PC using thie Catweasel is my best option?

If anyone else has any idea's I'd love to hear from them please.

I'd also like to be able to make some boot disks to test old machine's I have here.

A1000, DSE CAT (Apple II clone) and so on.

I am also available for chat using IM or VoIP.

TNX,
Ken - vk4akp

Hi

Welcome to Amigans.net

I would have said www.amigakit.com however, their catweasel link on the front page links to product not found.

Drop Matthew a line at AmigaKit he is very helpful and will probably let you know if the product is still in production or when he's getting stock. He has close ties with the designer / manufacturer.

Vesalia.de are also out of stock.

MKIII (Flipper) and MKIV do come up on ebay now and again also.

HUmm. AU$140+post for the Catweasel MK4 PCI when available. Wow.

How come so expensive?

I mean, gee you can get like a multi port Sata card for under $25 these days.

Also any comments on usability with Emerge and Sabayon?

And Apple II & TRS-80 disk support. ?

Simple economies of scale....

SATA cards are made in quantities of many many thousands. How many people need a Catweasel Mk IV? Hence production costs are much higher.

AU $140 is actually a very good price given the work that's gone into it and how few are in each production run.

HUmm, OK. Maybe so. (I could see that answer comming. :) )

But unfortunatly it's a big bite out of someone's income.

Even a sub AU$100 price would have been more realistic.

Oh well, it's not like there are a lot of other options. LOL.

I guess this is the only choice one has to be able to bridge the gap between the old tech and the new.

I see no other way to be able to archive, or create new disks for old retro gear with out one of these cards.

I really hope they go somewhere with the driver software.

Not just the Amiga and C64.

I really hope they support all the old computers like the Apple II, TRS-80, Atari, Spectrum, hell even being able to read the old CPM disks or 8" disks would be great.

Too much is lost to history. I'd really like to be able to do my bit and start injecting image files of all the old disks I find for retro gear into the internet for generations to come to enjoy.

The next trick will be to find a source of NOS stock for 5.25" & 8" suitable drives.

Hi, I think I'd rather get the new one. But I appreciate your offer.

Out of interest, how much are you selling your MK3 for?

And what has your experience been like with them?

Hi, I tried the USA and Canada sites and tried to order a Catweasel MK4 and also a X-SURF 3CC NETWORK CARD.

The sites said that there was no stock and the next run of catweasels would be some time in August 08?

So is there actual stock of these two items currently?

On another note I finally got around to pulling my A3000 down to remove the clock battery. I was warned some 10 years ago. And I am so mad I didn't do it sooner.

And yes there has been some leakage mainly around the single pin side.

I've cleaned it up with some co2 contact cleaner and sealed the area's with PCB laqure so hopefully it will stop or slow down the spread of the acid damage.

I know the m/boards are quad layer sandwitch style.

Anyone had any experience in this area?

Oh, Also I bought a A2300 Genlock board but have found out that it's a NTSC version. The one for Pal is A2301. I read somewhere that you can convert the A2300 to NTSC quiet easily but it didn't say how. Anyone know? Is it just a xtal change or something maybe?
