Which is the best VGA card for OS4.1?
Just popping in

See User information
Hello!

After I almost bid more than $800 on a Cyberstorm PPC the news about OS4.1/Sam440ep came out.

Well, the Sam board sells for $680. Compared to the Cyberstorm it's quite a bargain actually

The recommended VGA card for OS4.1 is a Radeon 9250. Different vendors build those, like HSI, Saphire, Diamond to name a few. Will either one of them work?

There are also versions with 256MB and DVI. Is DVI supported by OS4.1?

Now, I realize nobody has OS4.1 running on a Sam440ep yet. But maybe some of the lucky AmigaOne owners have some good advice

And one last question. Does OS4.1 support widescreen resolutions?

Thanks

I have a Sapphire 9250 PCI 256MB and it works great in OS 4.1. DVI is supported and yes, widescreen resolutions are possible by adding the MODE= tooltypes in the monitor file.

I think you would be happy with the 9250 256MB version :)

I've installed a Sapphire 9250 256MB AGP card in my Amiga One and no issues so far with OS 4.1

Sapphire cards, AGP and PCI, seem readily available - ebuyer.com have them in stock now and the prices seem reasonable.

I'm sure an Amiga One running OS 4.1 with the aforementioned card will be up and running at The MAG bash in November.

Does DVI support go back to AOS4 prerelease 4?

Just to make certain, DVI is better than using a VGA cable?

Also, how do I redirect to DVI? Does it have anything to do with UBoot? And I should probably save my screen res to 640*480 before switching over?

I want to attach it to a 1366*768 max. res LCD TV. Is 1024*768 the best picture I can get?

Support Amiga Fantasy cases!!!
How to program: 1. Start with lots and lots of 0's. 10. Add 1's, liberally.

No, it stopped working after UBoot.

Yes.

Nothing to do, just connect something to DVI port.

It does not hurt, but its unnecessary.

Depends on the LCD TV...

I mean, does AOS4 make 1366*768 res images?

DVI does work in Uboot, but as soon as the OS4.0 radeon driver is loaded you dont get a signal from DVI.

The 4.1 driver does support dvi.

I have not tested this res, but I thing it does work.

under OS4.0 my res was set to 1600x1200 and under 4.1 i now use the native res of my tft: 1920x1200.

Couple of questions...

I read that Radeon 9000 is faster than 9250. Why Hyperion recommended 9250 for A1/OS4.1?

If the 9000 is better, where can I buy it? What's the difference between standard and Pro version?

Somewhere I saw the 9000 comes with 64MB of gfx memory. Is that enough for OS4.1?

What do I gain if I buy 128MB version? And 256MB version?
Does OS4.1 make use of it somehow? For what?

Thanks!

Hyperion doesn't recommend the best card, they recommend what they seem to bo the minimum graphic card to enjoy the new graphic system of OS 4.1.

As usual, the more the better.

Regarding Gfx memory, take a 128 MB one, it will be ok (anyway a 256MB one will only show 128 MB under OS 4.1).

Even 64Mb would be enough to enjoy OS 4.1.

Graphic memory will be used for transparency, compositing, etc..

As usual, the more the better

That is a bug, future updates of OS4.1 will use 256MB.

Okay, is the Radeon 9000 better (or the best) option for the OS4.1 at the moment?

A 9000 Pro or 9200 Pro should be the best available (theorically).

Any link where to buy? Together with OS4.1 if possible.

At http://shop.alinea-computer.de/ they have both, but the gfx card is not PRO and holds 64MB of memory only

But the Radeon 9000 is faster than a Radeon 9250.

Yep, that's why I asked for the link where I can buy the 9000, preferably the PRO version with 128MB of memory.

What about Radeon 8500? Its performance should be even better as the 9xxx series are "downgraded" from 8500, AFAIK.

Is the Radeon 8500 compatible with A1-XE/OS4.1?

According to THIS TABLE the best choice would be Radeon 8500 or 8500 LE (which is almost the same as 9100). Are those compatible with OS4.1 and its composition feature?

It does, but you have to suffer squished pictures until you can alter the tooltypes on the relevant Monitor in DEVS:, as the installer only lists four 4:3 ratio resolutions (is this something for the next version / update ?)

my 17" eMachines WXGA is quite happy with the 1280x720@56 Hz mode I gave the Radeon driver.
