Testing SAM for the new SAM case
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

See User information
Hi everyone,

I have received a SAM with OS4.1, 2.5" SATA HD, power supply, SATA DVD-RW from Laurent aka Faranheit.

He is basically sponsoring the testing of my new case for the SAM and I would like to thank him for being so generous in providing all this hardware, hopefully it will make testing the case easier and quicker. If everything goes to plan his shop will be one of the first ones to sell it.

I have connected everything up but I have a few questions:

1) Do any of the internal USB headers work on the SAM? When I connect an internal USB card reader or a USB keyboard, nothing happens. OS 4.1 doesn't see them on J19a and J19b and also J17.

2) The USB keyboard works fine when connected to J18 but not when connected to the internal USB headers, same for the generic USB card reader (via USB headers).
Do I have to do anything in the BIOS (UBoot)? How do I access it?

3) When playing a DVD in DVPlayer, there is no sound. Also there is a tearing/ripping effect when moving images are playing, for example someone running gets some lines on the screen.

If anyone could please shed some light on those issues, I would appreciate it.

PS: OS4.1 looks the business

To Laurent, thanks again

Firstly, I have moved this topic to a more relevant forum, seeing as it has nothing to do with AmiCygnix

The internal headers J19a/b are supported by OS4, but J17 isn't, apparently.

UBoot only supports the top rear port for the keyboard, so you should always ensure you use that. OS4 will find the keyboard in any port.

The default AHI settings set the volume to "Off". Go into AHI prefs, select each unit in turn, and move the volume slider to the top.

Thanks, I have no idea why it ended up there

>>The internal headers J19a/b are supported by OS4, but J17 isn't, apparently.

I see, strange that nothing is recognised by OS4 when either a USB keyboard or my internal USB card reader are connected to J19a/b.

>>UBoot only supports the top rear port for the keyboard, so you should always ensure you use that. OS4 will find the keyboard in any port.

So there is no way that a USB keyboard connected to J19a/b will be seen by UBoot unless ACube modify Uboot?

>>The default AHI settings set the volume to "Off". Go into AHI prefs, select each unit in turn, and move the volume slider to the top.

Will try that. Thanks.

Do you know why when playing a DVD through DVPlayer there is a tear effect?

Thank you.

I have got another little problem.

When I press the key with the following symbols on "#" and "~" nothing is displayed.

That is the only key, all the others seem to work fine.

Has anyone had the same problem?

Do I have to use another keyboard layout...maybe?

Thank you

Note: the Sam documentation on ACube website could answer your questions about USB

About the missing keys: where do you type them? in OS4? Of course you need to set the correct keyboard setting.

Hi Elw,

>>About the missing keys: where do you type them? in OS4? Of course you need to set the correct keyboard setting.

I am typing in the pad program (in OS4.1) and all the keys work apart from the one with the "#" and "~" on...this is so strange.

The keyboard settings are U.K.

Thinking about it Scrool Lock also doesn't work.

Also is PrtScn key supported?

I have tested the same keyboard on a pc and it works.

Any help?

You mean "British" in Prefs/Input. You need to type Shift Alt 3 to get the #
You can edit with notepad Devs:Keymaps/gb
You'll find every possible keys for this keymap.

Scroll lock is used as the "Help" key here (french keyboard) and I think it's the same for many keyboards as well, including "gb".

PrtScn is not used/supported in OS4, AFAIK.

Yes, in Prefs/Input is set to British.

Why? And how do I get the "~"?

DO you mean I can edit what kind of key I want it to appear by editing that file? (Sorry I have not used OS4 before, and OS3.9 a few years ago)

>>Scroll lock is used as the "Help" key here (french keyboard) and I think it's the same for many keyboards as well, including "gb".

I see. So you can edit any key you want to make it print any character you want?

So I could tell OS4.1 to print the "# ~" when that key is pressed?

Thank you

Yes. It's a new feature of OS4.

Hi Elwood,

Don't you know the first "Law of Computing"?

1. No OS may or can be better than win-dos.

I see. So it shouldn't be a problem assigning the "# ~" to the right key.

It's ever so weird, all the other keys are just fine...

Is there a way to change the time UBoot takes to look for USB devices?

I have managed to stop and to get a list of all the commands by writing help.

I would like to know if you can increment the time UBoot takes to scan for USB devices as I think my USB keyboard doesn't respond as fast as UBoot would like so it just says only 1 USB device found (the mouse).

Thank you

I think have found out why OS4.1 doesn't use the "# ~" key or better it doesn't display those two characters when that key is pressed!

On some keyboards the key "# ~" is next to the ENTER key (on its left), on my USB keyboard the key is ABOVE the ENTER key so what I htink is happening is that OS4.1 GB map hasn't got it mapped to the ABOVE key but to the key next to the ENTER key so it doesn't work.

Can anyone confirm my theory please, anyone with some knowledge of OS4.1?

Rogue?

I have tried editing the keymap GB but nothing, when pressed the key "# ~" doesn't display anything...

This key is situated ABOVE the Enter key and not on its left side.

I would really love some help...

Thanks Toni, I will have a go.

I really wanted to figure out how to modify the Keymap GB file so that OS4.1 recognises the key when pressed...

Maybe Rogue is going to come to the rescue soon

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

I am not sure I am doing the right thing here;

I am using the pad to edit the GB Keymap and move the "# ~" key from the left hand side of the Enter key to the top of the Enter key but I am failing. It doesn't work.

ARGH!

Also:

I can't seem to be able to use any keyboard shortcuts using the right "A" (Windows) key.

"A"+C should cut and "A"+V should paste but nothing happens.

I have tried with two (USB pc) keyboards.

Help?

Thank you
