OpenOffice to AmigaOS 4 - When?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

See User information
There has been a lot of talk about porting OpenOffice to AmigaOS 4, so i wonder how far the progress has gone into working on the AmigaOS4 version of OpenOffice..

Now that AmigaOne X1000 is on it's way, and that many of the new features like Java, SMP-support, new graphic subsystem, better 3D-capabilities and much more are
to be worked on for future AmigaOS 4 products, then
it would be an idea to work on a Java-version of
OpenOffice for AmigaOS4..

Just would like to know when we can expect to see OpenOffice for AmigaOS4?

Are you so certain of that? The question might be old, but underestimated. Wouldn't it be better to show any profs that what you are saying is right, or simply wrong, instead of just jumping to conclusions?

Remember: Prejustice is ignorance..

Also remember that OpenOffice is actually Open Source!
Why shouldn't OpenOffice make an impact on the Amiga?
Most Open Source programs actually do, so why shouldn't OpenOffice?

Not to offend you, but you don't really sound much as a faithful Amiga-supporter being way too negative..

Well we need java first before open office if i understood it right? My question is how long it would take for one person fulltime porting it to os4?

Well, not necessarily having to wait for the Java, but mostly preferrable, i guess, so it might take a while, i think..

For one person fulltime it might take quite a while, but if there are several persons behind it, it will speed up development, yeah..

OpenOffice does not need Java. Common misconception.

Part of OO requires JAVA but AFAIK on Linux it's possible to get a usable version installed without JAVA.

But do we really need OO (we have Abiword in AmiCygnix)?

IMHO what we need is a rock stable OS with all modern features implemented and a rock solid webbrowser (Firefox/Timberwolf) to use f.ex google docs.
Future is going to be net based for a lot of functions so I am wondering if it will be worth the effort to get a HUGE application like OO ported when alternatives will reach us via the net

I think it can be possible to port OO,but the main problem is that its such an huge task. So only a possible handfull of people have the required skills to build such a monster. Also seems to only have sources for X86. That means xtra work.

And every known sw is good for os4.

Second.

Plus OO is a beast.
NO hobby Amiga user will EVER need all those functions that are in there.
Better way to support i.e. Cinnamon Writer and let that evolve into a fast, handy and useable word processor.

Do we really need openoffice or just a good spreadsheet and word processor that support import/export of PC format ???

- For esample ambiworld native or great PC format import/export on pagestrem are maybe enough.

Maybe just the amiga users want is to said: we have openoffice and we have firefox (for attract new users) and It's verry understandable

I doubt that OOo is written in assembler, so the sources will not be specifically for x86.

Hi @Raziel
...OO is a beast.
HJF ruled out Java in his interview, but OO qualifies for MAP. What do you think? It's hard to 'nail' the MAP to the wall. The only clue I picked up on what something wanted for the Amiga platform for a long time...

ahh yes..perhaps this is part of the MAP !...I was waiting for some software surprises when the X1000 arrived but nothing then..only hardware so I'm waiting for either a major update release (ala OS4.2 or dare I say OS5.0) or possibly something like OO for us

What I think is that the best way to be sure to see OOo on OS4 one day is to support both ACube and Hyperion.
This is a hidden message to all Classic owners that still didn't jump in the train

Could be, everything could be as long as nothing has been officially announced

The problem with all these large ports you have is (imho) decreasing manpower to keep it up-to-date.
But maybe (if it is part of the MAP) Hyperion surprises us once again?

Does it necessarily mean there's nothing going on in the background?

I don't think anyone is working on it.

it is possible, but a huge task, the biggest problem we have right now is the GUI. (GTK/QT?)
