Paying an Amiga developer
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
Hello everyone,

You know already that "union makes strength" so I thought what about using this to pay a fulltime developer?
If we all give 10$ each month, we can reach at least 3000$ without problems.

This would be enough to pay a full time developer to develop what we all want.

How does it sound?

Isn't that what bounties are for?

Sounds good.

Should we perhaps start looking at things we need, or are we looking into the what we would like more of?

Cheers

I would support this idea as long as the planed item become a reality. Some kind of an aggreement would have to be drawn up.

Once again I Will support it as long as it is formaly structured.

This would be a legaly binding thing. And I don't think we have any right to employ a programmer (giving him montly wages) this way. Bounties are suitable for this but would everybody pay 10$ a month.

AmiDevSupport fails because they are looking for a Linux programmer from India or some Eastern European nation where the cost of living is cheap. The problem with that line of reasoning, at least for India, is that programmers there are only taught Java and .NET due to limitations of their educational system. C++ programmers are available but harder to find due to financial markets scooping them up by the droves. Almost all of them are Windows developers.

People working on bounties are doing it on their spare time.
What I propose here is a full time developer. Working all days on some work will make him complete things much faster than with any bounty.

@Samurai_Crow

Thanks for the hint.
To the countrary of AmiDevSupport, I was thinking about one of our developers. Some of them are freelances, so they would fit nicely to such scheme.

Anybody can work as a freelance. Then if the money comes from one's own country or not shouldn't make a difference, IMO.

This can work only if everybody can give 10$ each month. People must understand this.

Like in a real company, the more you work, the more you're paid. If the dev have small problems on some work and the timeline slips away a little, he will have to explain why, but it's no big deal.
If he really stops working, he gets "fired" by the "community company".

well that's fine if it's someone we know & trust but what if a new developer shows up from India and takes the money, shows some progress and then disappears with the money.....just playing devils advocate here

i think that the best safe way is to put the work of the coder in a reposity or ftp who will be accessible to everyone who contribute to the project, so everyone could see and test the progress done by the coder..

Consider also that he will not receive all the money together in one time, but he will be payed month per month (10 euros per person) so if he did nothing, we simply stop to put money

Why? Because I thought it was a nice idea. Not so easy to do but still possible.

I liked the idea but I think that first we need to define the first project the developer will work on and the number of persons who will contribute with the money so we can know if the idea can be executed or not

Maybe finding out what 'we' want to get ported/made first, Then saying that we'll pay you x amount for getting that sw??

example:
The coder gets $8k for porting open office. And sets a timeframe or something.

But a fulltime developer is more like $6500 a month at least around here. Still not saying it can't be done but things like that need a good deal of planning and you need a lot of people willing to pay EVERY month (I will;)

We'd also have to keep in mind that even if working fulltime a single developer can't perform miracles.
