Great! I never got a working X11 installed on my system. I will wait for next version for OS4 Final.

Do you want some help trying, if so pm me. It is very fast and the potential is great. Some of the later software offerings such as Amaya don't seem to want to work under Final, even with a reinstall but Gimp etc is worth a play around with even if trying to understand the Unix like dir/file structures.

This has huge potenntial for AOS4 users in filling some gaps as the OS re-establishes.

I now what's coming, this is exciting, may not be Amiga native, but it will open up a new world.

2007 the year it all begins to change.

It is native just that the programs depends on X-Windows for graphic output.
For example these programs can take advantage of the Amiga data type system or AHI.

The problem we have whit porting Linux programs to Workbench or native intuition screens is there heavy dependents on GTK / QT this GUI systems again depends on X-Windows, if we can replace GTK or QT libraries whit some kind of replacement then we can remove X-Windows, theoretically from most Linux ports.

Let?s say we just remove GTK GUI system and replace it whit Reaction, we can do that, but then it will take more time to port programs to AmigaOS4 whit little gain.

So what we need is GTK for Intuition whit no dependencies on X11, if we like avoid X-Windows.

Try it under Debian Stable on an A1. No problems at all, fast and accurate.

This is great indeed.

I haven't seen this X11 on OS4 (or OS4 at all) but AFAIR it is kind of a X11 box. So maybe the next step should be to improve the integration with the system? I'm not speaking about writing GTK->Reaction wrapper (because although it would be nice it's a hell of a job) but letting the windows open on Workbench. Best solution would be a tool like MUI screen manager.

@cygnused

I also have a question to you. How hard is it to port such big apps like AbiWord or Gimp to OS4 and your X11 server? Do you use all the libraries and packages ported already by others or you have to compile your own? As a programmer, I'm looking for some technical details

Huh, my first post. Welcome everyone!

he is compiling all dependencies, but now that we have X11 libs and GTK2, the 90% of things is done

For the first version of Abiword or Gimp I needed about one day, but a lot of the needed libs were already compiled.
In most cases the plugin system is not working because of the missing fork() or dynamic linking. This takes much longer
to port.
I only use my own compiled libs. I had a lot of problems with other libs, some crashed, some didn't
work together with Cygnix. On the other hand my libs mostly don't work without Cygnix. Because of this,
there are some issues in combination with the OS4 SDK.

Gaim needs GTK 2.10, but at the moment I only have GTK 2.6.9

But @all: Suggestions for ports are always welcome. But as I've said
above, it should depend on < GTK 2.6

Amaya is working here without problems (Last published package). Please try to launch it from a shell to
see possible error messages.

@ikir

Please try my next package, but the I did not make much changes to the X server. If it still does not work,
you can contact me by mail.

A long awaited port for me is FontForge. There is not any recent font editor on Amiga and it would be a great application for every PageStream users.

And certainly thank you for your great work!

Had a look at the sources, but I couldn't find a GTK GUI, only a X11 GUI. It's version 20061220 downloaded at sourceforge.
Or is it the wrong program?

No. That is what I mentioned.

AFAIK it is only X11. The windows binary is running on cygwin too.
