I've changed the title, but I still believe it is an SSL problem, related to using SMTube + certain versions of MPlayer in countries where YouTube has started enforcing SSL.
If I use YT.rexx (with SSL switch) then I have no problem. Or if I use SMTube with old slow version of MPlayer, then no problem. Arguably both SMTube *and* MPlayer need fixing...
This SSL problem is also discussed below for YT.rexx, so it would hardly be a surprise if it affected SMTube too:

Youtube dot com seems to default so SSL link for the videos themselves. This is not something mplayer I use is happy with, though wget does work. Is it possible to still use plain HTTP directly, it seems no?
