Can anybody tell me what are those so big things in Magellan you people need that don't exist in OS4 WB together with the following commodities: AutoUpdateWB, BenchTrash, RAWBInfo, DefIcons, AsyncWB, AmiDock, ClickToFront, DepthToFront, ContextMenus. And Unarc and Cranu are good enough for me dealing with archives. (I think I'm a simple guy so I need only simple solutions.

(Btw. I'm making my own "WB clone" just for fun and experimenting AOS software development more. I like to know what kind of features people like.)

Diropus Magellan is file manager that end up as being a desktop replacement.

There are many ways Diropus Magellan can execute simple CLI commands (lha, unzip), REXX, and CLI scripts to do many advanced task, by simply dragging and dropping, menus or toolboxes.

Workbench on the other hand is kind of restricted to one tooltype action predefined by deftools prefs and simple copy, rename actions.

"WB clone"

I don?t think you should call it a clone, it a replacement whit the power of a filemanager.

But you can put necessary applications on AmiDock and drag and drop any files on the applications icon.

If using both magellan II and Dopus 8 as examples. Proper file listers, any amount of listers, ability to browse archives as regular directories (ie zip/lha/lzh), built in ftp support. Different browsing modes such as power mode and flat view. Enormous amount of reconfigurability. Powerful renaming functions (multiple files with wild cards).

Ohh and the best of all, double clicking the wb background and a standard lister shows up :)

What's the difference between Magellan lister and WB drawer in list view mode ?

You can choose "open drawer" from popup menu when using "ContextMenus" commodity.

For example that the WB has no real list view mode, it doesn't display the icons, but it loads them even when using "View by Name" making it much slower in directories with a lot of icons.

DOpus reads the directories themself several times faster as well by using the AmigaOS 2.x+ ExAll() (at least DOpus4 can do that, I guess it's the same in Magellan), the workbench still uses the very slow kickstart 1.x method (ExNext()).

Plus the problems of new windows opening when clicking drawers. The annoying individual settings for icon mode, icon positions (if in icon mode) and window size of each drawer. No fast commands in each lister. No source/destination paradigm. Not being able to open the same path twice. No root level showing all devices/assigns. No resizing/configuration of columns. No sorting options. Can't see size of drawer contents. No flat view.

Basically put, the os4 listers are stuck in the 1980's :) I'm looking forward to either magellan being released or an updated workbench in 4.x whichever comes first :)

Unfortunately I want that lister to show a list of all devices and assigns, not a specific drawer. And I'd like to be able to open any amount of listers showing the same stuff.

Have a play with scalos.

WARNING - DON'T PLAY WITH SCALOS, IT'S EVIL.

I just tried it and it replaced my workbench and font settings, I had icons dissappear as well... I can't prove it was scalos but as I had nothing else unusual running at the time...

To really know what DOpus Magellan is and feels like, it's necessary to actually use it.
I was sceptical at first, but after buying and installing it, I was hooked. It makes almost everything easier, especially "house-cleaning" tasks.

It's the tool I miss the most from my 3.9 days.

It's about time to bump this thread.

Any news regarding the development? I think there might be much more customers since the release of OS4Classic.

Hi @TSK

Me too! Back in OS3.5 this was 'thee' filemanager! Magellan's speed of doing files was star! I liked the idea of 'file sniffer' - that was so cool. As Joerg says, it had dedicated code to rip through the file db!

@ TiredofLife
Only ever used Opus 5.5.
I have a registered MagII 5.86. The FTP file handling is a key feature!
