Collector 3.5 and Index Files loading
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Hi,

Since the OS4 Final my index file from Collector 3.5
load 10 times slower... I made several test and the
cause of the problem come from one or more files
in the kickstart directory.

Thank you.

Is this "Collector" a 68k or PPC application?

I know nothing about it but perhaps it is old software in need of a fix.

It's a 68k app...

The loading of the index file was always fast before the
OS4 final... maybe it's a bug! :o)

Wish I could restore that bug!

Bye!

Which file system are you using on the partition on which this index file is?

Hi,

The index file is on my SYS (SmartFilesystem 1.267), I
try to load the file from RAM and still loading very slow.

Another test I made (not recommended), I install the kickstart
directory of my backup (OS4 Update 4) on my SYS and made a Hard Reset,
then I try to load the index file and it load fast like before.

The cause of the slow loading come from one of the kickstart file
but I can't figure wich one(s).

Thank you.

Bye!

No you should not mix final and update 4 modules, go for dual boot option if this really is important to you, any way you can disable all drivers you do not use like the voodoo driver and the sii / sil drivers.

Hi,

> No you should not mix final and update 4 modules,

I know that, that's why I wrote "not recomended", the
system was unstable, a lot of GR, it was only a test
to see where the lost of speed come from.

Thank you.

I've downloaded gfx/misc/Collector.lha from aminet to check what the problem is, but when creating the thumbnails the included MPImage.library crashes sooner or later. Is there another MPImage.library somewhere without these bugs?

MPImage.library 8.2 is the newest.
Maybe it should be in the JIT-Blacklist?

It is the program counter of Collector that is in side the library, trying to turn off JIT on a library will probably have no effect, on the program that crashes in side library.

Hi,

I just try to reinstall from scratch the Collector program
and I had the same problem, it crash when trying to make
thumbnails. I replace a library.

Check in your libs if you have the latest popupmenu.library,
maybe you overwrite the one you have or you did not have
one, after replacing this library with that one
(popupmenu.library 52.1 (2006-12-09) It doe'nt crash anymore.

If you can't find this lib just E-Mail me...

Bye!

I have popupmenu.library 52.1 installed, but the crashes are not popupmenu.library related anyway, it crashes in MPImage.library.
Maybe MPImage.library works with some image formats but not the ones I used (JPEG and GIF, IIRC the crashes were always with JPEG images, but I'm not sure).

Hi,

Ok if you want to test the loading speed you need to
be able to revert to your OS4 Pre.4.

You can download (everyone that would like to test this) an
index file at: ftp://invite:invite@pgx.dynu.com/CartesAffaires.idx

Thank you.

I didn't test it with Update4 yet (I currently don't have a partition with Update4 installed), but was this index file really loaded in about 2 seconds on Update4 by Collector 3.5 on your system? That's of course possible, but since the rest of Collector is very slow here (before it crashes ...) it seems to be unlikely.
On my system Collector 3.5 loads this index file in about 23 seconds from a SFS partition and in about 24 seconds from RAM Disk:.

I just test the loading speed with OS4 Pre4 and it took
less than 2 seconds... I'l say 1.8 second

The easiest way to test this is to?make two directories on
your boot partition (OS4_Pre4 and OS4_Final), then you
copy your backup of your OSPre4 in the directory OS4_Pre4,
then MOVE all files/directory from SYS: to OS4_Final and
MOVE all files/directory from OS_Pre4 to your SYS:, then
reset the A1 (CTRL+ALT-L+ALT-R). I'm sure you know how
to go back to your OS4_Final. ;o)

Bye!

Thank you.

I downloaded your index file & loaded it into Collector 3.5. Both ud4 & final loaded it in the same time here, 28 sec.

Now if you're talking about makeing the index thumbs, that takes about 2 secs per image for me.

Look, only one leg, count em, one!

No I'm really talking about the time to load the index file.

OS4 Pre4 -=> 1.8 sec
OS4 Final -=> 23-25 secs

I don't understand why you don't have the speed difference,
did you hard reset your machine, you must load the kickfiles
in kickstart of pre4.

I don't have any differences either, 23 seconds with OS4 final as well as with Update4.

But Collector does next to nothing when it loads the index, it's waiting for something most of the time, and it's not waiting for the data it reads. Maybe it only updates the progress gauge once every frame and if you are using a Readon maybe that didn't work in Update4 yet.
You could try if using the ATIRadeon.chip from Update4 with the rest from AmigaOS final makes it faster again, if that's the case it was a bug/missing feature in the Radeon driver which was fixed in the final version of OS4.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Yup, hard boot for each. I'm having a hard time believing a 12MB index file could load in under 2 sec. Is there an option to load the index & not show the thumbs until the index is fully loaded? That would make sense to me. I'm using SFS under ud4 & final.

You got it... I replace the ATIRadeon.chip file in kickstart
with the one in OS4 Pre4 and the speed loading is like before.

Now... you know how it is sometimes, we fix some bug(s) and
create new one(s)! ;o) I Hope it is a bug!

Thank you very much!

Now should I keep the old ATIRadeon.chip? I'll see if this
cause other problem.

Bye!
