As the tittle says:

Is there support for mkv (Matrovska HDTV) on OS4.1?

I am downloading a soccer match from last week's Champions League and the format is .mkv.

I know MPlayer plays a lot of formats but I'm not sure if it supports HDTV videos.

I am using OS4.1u1.

yes, mplayer suports mkv but...
Probably your CPU cant play them...
Only G4(with altivec) can play 720p videos(and not the files with heavy encoding) for my knowledge...
However try and than tell us :)

Good Luck!

High-def videos are usually encoded in H.264. Even if there's a codec for playback, I don't think any AmigaOS 4 hardware is fast enough to do it.

My dual 1.8 Ghz PowerMac G5 stutters on 720p H.264 video, and 1080p is completly unwatchable.

Unfortunatly, video decoding is one of those applications that just requires pure, grunt power.

(The reason HD videos are usually in H.264 is that if they're not, the files are either massively huge, or have terrible compression artifacting from using less efficient compression methods.)

Edit: Let me add, that Matroska files usually AREN'T in high def.

It's just the currently popular container format, replacing .avi because it supports things .avi doesn't.

HD files are usually in Matroska, but so are lots of standard-def files.

I don't think I've had any luck with MKVs, probably the codec used isn't supported by MPlayer. MP4s nearly work, but some bug causes MPlayer to grind to a halt after a second or two. AVIs seems the best bet..
