ArtEffect and Layers

I have the original version of AE 4.0 for the amiga with the instruction manual but the manual don't explain what is a layer and how to use it in ArtEffect..

Where i can find information about it and how do they work on AE ? how do i use them in AE ?

Think of a layer as a glass sheet that you put over your picture

lets say you have a background picture of a hill

This is a layer call the "background"

lets say you want to add a tree to the picture you have two choices

A) draw on the background image directly if you screw up the background you have to use Undo but you can't draw the tree then move it.

B) Create a new layer and draw the tree think of it as a transparent image sitting on top of your background you can cut and paste into this layer(glass sheet) and move the tree around without effecting your background image

when you save teh image save it as a layered image so that you can edit it again

for example if you drew a really cool button for a web site and wanted to put differnt text on it you could create the button as a bavckground image then create a layer that holds the text.

Mostly with layers you can switch them on and off as you want

so you could have 5 layers which would hold the background image and four different strings that go on the button.

if you save the image as a layer then in 1 week when you need another button you just load the layered image create a new layer and add the text.

Also you can also usually make a layer semi transparent
