Connection of A2000 keyboard to SAM440ep
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

As my A2000 keyboard is still in good shape & my SAM (Dell) keyboard's letters are worn away,I did hunt for info about reusing the first keyboard.
I came across
http://ezhid.sourceforge.net/amikbd.html
and
http://www.linux-usb.org/ezusb/

It does not seem to provide a direct answer to what i want, but could probably rather easily be adaptrf to do just that.

What about including the frimware in the X1000 ?

Anyway i am rather puzzled with the connection diagram given : what are the PC4 & PC5 contacts?
I don't see them here:

PC5 and PC4 has to be on the EZ-USB board, its not the USB port.

And NO you can't connect the pins directly, the USB port is protocol driven technology.

The connector on Amiga is not too unlike the PS2 standard on PC, but If I remember correct the PS/2 to Amiga adapter used a PIC chip to code/decode something.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_connector

Hemm it looks like Amiga connector uses the AT standard

USB is defined as a Data over Power standard...

The electrical lines provide both power and signalling paths

If you have some kind of PS/2 connector on the X1000 then you may have a chance to hookup an Amiga Keyboard however the scancodes provided to the X1000 would not be understood using the default firmware and would require a new Keymap setup.

It may be better for you to simply buy another PC USB keyboard to replace the dell one once it becomes unusable.

Thanks for all info & final suggestion, i'll have to stick to i guess.
Remark The connector is not a PS/2 but a DIN connector

to which LiveForIt's mentioned page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_keyboard pointed.

Just for completeness... known information is repeated here.

For the A1000 it uses an RJ11 connector for the keyboard,

For the A500/A500+ they use a MOS chip and header to the motherboard,

the A600 and A1200 have the Keyboard Controller itself directly on the motherboard

For the A2000 and A3000 the DIN A5? plug is used for the AT style keyboard connector

For the A4000 the Keyboard is PS/2 plug connected.

it will be possible to use a USB to PS/2 or USB to DIN adapter but it will need to be programmed for handling the Amiga scancodes off the keyboard

All of these have a 5v DC line for the power feed excepting the USB feed which is an AC type of power feed to my understanding...

If anything here is wrong, can you please correct me?

USB cable/connector has four wires. Two of them (Red and Black) are simply +5V DC and ground. The other two (Green and White) are the two signal wires.

The DC and signals are not mixed, they are separate. The signal wires (White and Green) carry information in either direction, using a balanced transmission method.

USB uses a question-and-answer protocol on the bus, unlike PS/2, which simply sends data blindly.

You would need something intelligent to convert from USB to a DIN connector, but it might work with a USB-PS/2 and then a PS/2-DIN adaptors.

It's so much easier and cheaper to throw away the old keyboard and buy a new one. A good quality Microsoft-branded wired keyboard costs only $20, including a new wired mouse as well.

cheers

I've purchased an Amiga Keyboard to USB adapter some times ago but it does'nt work very well for intensive use. (key repeated but I still have to update the firmware of the adapter...)

http://pulkomandy.tk/projects/avrstuff/wiki/ak2tousb

Otherwise it works.

tonyw, there is also the amigaone keyboard (logitech) which will suit a sam better than a microsoft one ;) . Available with a belgian layout.

I have one myself and have a good feeling with it.
