Amiga Events : Radeon HD Cards Now Work with the SAM 440ep Motherboard
Posted by Mikey_C on 2009/12/7 21:24:36 (2938 reads) News by the same author

From Hans de Ruiter's website (2009-11-27):

This morning ACube Systems released UBoot updates for their SAM 440ep and SAM 440-flex motherboards. These updates include fixes that allow Radeon X1000 series and higher (e.g., Radeon HD 2400) cards to work with the SAM 440ep. Previously, the SAM 440ep's UBoot failed to detect the card properly, meaning that SAM 440ep owners could not use the RadeonHD graphics card driver for Amiga OS 4.x that I am developing.

Click on "Read More"....

The problem with the SAM 440ep board was that the Radeon HD PCI cards are actually PCI-Express graphics cards with a buiilt-in PCI-Express-to-PCI bridge. As a result, the card appears as a device behind a bridge to the system. This is the same issue that seems to be preventing Pegasos II users from using the same graphics cards on their system.
With this UBoot update, a large number of Amiga OS 4.x users are now able to use more modern graphics cards. All that remains to be done, is for me to finish the drivers...

This is good news for everyone. As more can help hans testing his work.

Before anyone gets confused, this is about the same UBoot update that ACube released several days ago. It's quoting something that was written on that day, so "this morning" means the morning that it was originally written, not this morning.

@Mikey_C:

It's probably not a good idea to quote a posting from Hans' website without introducing it with e.g. "From Hans de Ruiter's website:" or "Posted by ..." or something, especially when it contains references to "the driver ... that I am developing" - not that we'd suspect you of developing graphics card drivers, of course!

And "This morning" was actually ten days ago now, so the original posting date would probably also have been useful as an introduction. I actually zipped over to ACube's site just to make sure they hadn't released yet another UBoot .

Sorry, don't mean to nag, just offer some (hopefully constructive) feedback.

Best regards,

Niels

 Re: Radeon HD Cards Now Work with the SAM 440ep Motherboard
Would a beefier graphics card than the internal Sam440ep one give me better performance?

Would it appreciably speed up UAE?

Thanks

Don't tjink so,as the pci slot on the ep is only 33mhz.

Just building on what Antique said, the speed of UAE is dominated by the emulation, not the speed of the graphics system. I wouldn't expect to see any speedup, ignoring the speed of the PCI bus.

My primary reason for developing the driver is that I want to eventually be able to use shaders in OpenGL (a long term goal). Plus, we can't rely on old graphics cards forever, and I still expect that we'll get better hardware at some point in the future.

@grim_fandango

Not for 440ep but on a Flex you should see a speed improvement in graphics operations (not in UAE).

I suspect the only noticable difference would be with Quake 3 (and perhaps some other 3D-heavy programs).

 Re: Radeon HD Cards Now Work with the SAM 440ep Motherboard
It will not give more performance but now you can use a graphic card with more memory letting you use a bigger resolution at 32bit color depth.

The soldered Sam440ep video card has in fact only 64Mb and it is quite small for a resolution of 1680x1050 or a 1920x1080 (full hd).

I now have two video card in my small Sam440ep (PCI 9250 with 128Mb) and I'm really happy, unfortunately I still have issues like:
- some demo, game and warp3d stuff doesn't work at all and freeze the system;
- the Cygnix package have issues that you need to manually fix
- installing the debian linux with two video cards requires you to know how to configure the X sustem

 Re: Radeon HD Cards Now Work with the SAM 440ep Motherboard
Ok, so I want to go buy a new graphic card toy for the SAM Flex with this new uboot installed...

What card is available in Kiwiland that I could buy now (technically the best) and put the radeon 128 to one side...

And do I need to tweak these settings (running on a 22" LCD)

CMPLENGTH=6
BOARDNAME=Radeon
VSYNCMIN=56
VSYNCMAX=75
HSYNCMIN=30000
HSYNCMAX=83000
MODE=640x480@60
MODE=800x600@60
MODE=1024x768@60
MODE=1280x1024@60
MODE=1600x1200@60
MODE=1280x720@60
MODE=1440x900@60
MODE=1680x1050@60+RB
(MODE=1920x1080@60)
(MODE=1920x1200@60)
(FAKENATIVEMODES=Yes)
(INTERRUPT=Yes)

thanks for the insight

@all

Does anyone have an inexpensive Radeon HD card so that I could help test this?

Hey Valiant, are you really in West Jordan, Utah? I'm in Sandy. Do you have the Sam440ep, or the Flex?

Yes, I really am. I have the EP; wasn't quick enough to snag a flex. So you're in Sandy? Maybe I know you...where you ever in the AUSM users group?

 Re: Radeon HD Cards Now Work with the SAM 440ep Motherboard
@Slayer

The monitor tooltypes settings are mostly related to the monitor's capabilities, which only change if you change the monitor. About getting a RadeonHD card in NZ, there is an HD2400 available here. I got my HD 4350 from an Aussie shop (see the last item on the list, here).

Just note that users of RadeonHD cards are going to be without 3D support for a while. When it does come, 3D support will probably arrive for Radeon X1550 cards first (it's easier).

Those who are looking for a card for everyday use should still stick with Radeon 9000-9250 cards.

All these cards are pci-e. Won't I destroy my Sam Flex if I plug one of these cards in to the PCI slot!!
