Hardware News : New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Posted by Mikey_C on 2010/1/5 12:50:00 (10021 reads) News by the same author

Resized ImageFINALLY! A NEW HIGH END AMIGA COMPUTER! - THE WAIT IS OVER!

At the start of this journey, we posed the question 'what is X?' The answer is that X is many things. X is the Xena/XMOS chip, and the Xorro slot that accompanies it. X is the mystery CPU, and above all, X is the AmigaOne X1000, the new complete desktop computer system from A-EON.

It's almost 25 years since Commodore released the A1000 model that launched the line in the summer of 1985, and with the launch of the X1000 we will usher in a new beginning for the AmigaOS platform. Just as Commodore did with the A1000, we're aiming at the high-end first, with a powerful desktop computer aimed at the professional and serious hobbyist markets (although you won't have to wait until summer, and it should be a little cheaper!) The launch of the A1000 offered something new, and the X1000 will do the same. The world has moved on and custom chips no longer make much sense, but the X1000 offers a customisable chip as standard instead - 'Xena'.

Thanks to Xena and the Xorro interface, the X1000 offers extraordinary flexibility. We believe that with this easy gateway to the world of 'Software Defined Silicon' and a path to massive parallelism, the X1000 will once more make the AmigaOS platform the best choice for truly creative and unique applications. For custom hardware control from robotics to theatrical lighting, for hobbyist creativity, for hardware hacking and for a multitude of applications we haven't even imagined yet, the X1000 is a dream platform - and therein lies another meaning of 'X', the unknown. It is you, not us, who will define the future.

Of course that's far from all there is to the X1000. Even if you have no interest in the co-processor concept, the X1000 is by a large margin the most powerful and up-to-date platform for running AmigaOS. With a fast dual-core CPU and a full range of modern interfaces such as PCIe x16, SATA and USB 2.0, the already extremely responsive AmigaOS will at last have a truly high-end platform to run on. While AmigaOS has progressed massively over the last few years (and continues to develop more and more features at an impressive rate), the hardware to run it on has not kept pace. There was a time when we had great hardware as well as a great Operating System, and with the AmigaOne X1000, we can finally say that time is come again. While the entry level is currently well catered for by ACube's SAM motherboard, it is this return of AmigaOS to the high-end that truly ushers in a new beginning.

This looks like what a lot of people have been waiting for in terms of specs.

The added extras look really interesting.
Price may be the sticking point for some but surely not the spec.

Time to start saving.

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Sorry to be a bit pragmatic, but:

- Will the current AOS4.1.1 with all that drivers works on that board ? Or we need new drivers for everything (including 2d drivers, 3d drivers and other). Because if so, then, for making AOS4 working more or less ok on it, we need wait 2-3 years more .

- Will the AOS4 revision on that hardware have full memory-protection ? And if so, how it will deal with the old classic 68k apps ? Will 68k emulation just puttin in "box" like just e-uae , or will it still inside the kernel/etc ?

- What about SMP support ? It's already introduced into AOS4 ?

- More detailed techical details are highly interesting. Exactly CPUS speed for example. 1ghz ? 2 ? 3 ?

- Any price barier ?:) 500 ? 1000 ?

i think 2000 euros is the price considering that we are a small market and considering the batch of production.. well let' s see when they will give us the price.. hope they will do it in the very near future..

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
I think we all understand, that hardware itself without full-control by not-buggy, not-crasehs OS -> that is important. Because, without OS we already have these MAc's with 2ghz of CPU.

The main question and interest - how os4 will works on that hardware, what will be new in os4 related to that hardware, and how OS will utilized all that ports/cpus/devices and possibilitys. Because without drivers, without OS, it's just one more PPC machine by high price.

Will be cool to see some video of AOS4 running on that hardware (if it's already runs).

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Interesting long term, but at the moment I am far more interested in the promised bug fixes to make OS4.1 stable and usable on the hardware we have already purchased.

But Just before X-mas next year I maybe interested in a hardware upgrade, but only after the existing hardware I have is fully working under OS4.1 as expected.

Still new hardware is always exiting, I just cant get very exited any longer until I can hold it in my hand and purchase it, there have just been to many failed projects in Amiga Land over the years

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Concerning drivers, they have something working to give screenshots of the eight processes working at 25% CPU power each.

Concerning compatibility, the XMOS chip could possibly handle classic Amiga chip emulation at the hardware level. The OS itself could also execute OS2.04-4.x programs in a sandbox.

I share your concern of the price barrier. Prepare for sticker shock. If the price ends up being on the low end, be joyful and thankful.

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
@interrogative
I will have no shock, because i will not buy it before it will be tested heavily by other ppls, and before os4 will works fine on it. When, and if, then i will think about. So, these words "be joyful and thakful" it's not for me. I have enough money for my hobby, but stil, price it's interesting. I am not fanboy who will buy any hardware if there a "boing-ball" sticker :)

Related to the drivers: that screenshot about you talk - it's a a screenshot from unix command called "top". But i am (as many others here) in un-interest about Linux on it, because linux already on every platform.

Sorry to be a pragmatic and sceptic, but as we can see, even today for os4 we not have all the 100% working and working fine drivers (like warp3d drivers, or like usb2.0 drivers, or like some ISDN router drivers (that PPTP problems) ), so, thinking that that new hardware, will magically create all the drivers - that is funny. Only what will give us new hardware at first stage: it's a bugs for the 1-2 years minimum. Then, after all that problems and fixes it will be "usable".

There will be no magic :)

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Sometimes i hear the words "board" (as in Motherboard) maybe someone has missed the fact that this is the AmigaOne X1000 Full Computer not a naked mobo.

This is the first time we get something like this after the A4000!

Like the 2000 and 4000 the expandability of this thing is almost endless thanks to the whole Xorro concept (which can hold, among other things, accelerator cards with clusters of Xcores).

Quite frankly this is beyond anything I had ever imagined (a naked board with Dual Core and PCI-E was ambitious enough for me, but this full Computer is really a dream come true).

I don't think they will have to do the drivers all over again, if what many are saying is true (that the CPU will be an AMCC Titan) it will probably have on board controllers (USB2.0, Ethernet etc.)) similar to what Sam uses and they are about to bring out OS4.1.1 that already has drivers for all that.

Yeah ... Imagine their XMOS with 8 real-time thread ...
Now, Imagine an Amiga 500/ AGA emulator where each XMOS thread emulate 1 amiga custom chipset and, that'll use the main dual-core CPU to emulate the 680x0 ...

I was wondering about something :

for most things, you specify exact versions.. like USB2.0, SATA 2.0 and the like.. but for a very important part.. you say only PCI Express. Now I wonder, is this version 1, 2 or 3?

Take a break, chilout :) I only glad if os4 will works cool on that new hardware. But OS4 today have bugs, have problems and have many place on which need to work. We all know that, and not need to say that everytnig perfect. Of course if compare with AROS i choice AOS4, and even if compare with Morphos i choice AOS4 just by some reassons. But still, there even with the current state many areas which must be progressive more, and with new hardware we will have anyway new bugs. Sad, but truth. That is "end-user" reality. And we all already see that with A1, with SAM, with PEG2. With every new supported platform new bugs related to platform itself. And we all need to understand before scream "ooo amigggaaa", that with that new hardware, will be the same problem (for the begining). And after some time , fixes and polishing work - it will be good.

https://www.xmos.com/products/xs1-l-family/l1lq64 is the information about the XCore chip used in the computer. Its toolchain is written to use the LLVM (low-level virtual machine) instruction set in case you don't want to have to learn another Assembly language.

@Freddix
Do you want to team up with the Mattathias project yet? Our project is LLVM-based and will work on either XCore or PowerPC in addition to x86 when completed.

This news is just fantastic! It's what we have been waiting for so long, and this time it might actually truly happen! An old PC-friend of mine whom was a former Amiga-user, doubt hardly that such a hardware would come and it wasn't needed. This person claimed that it's the normal PC that is needed to run AmigaOS. I believe that person was wrong..

I guess he will get his hair winded all up when this system hits the shelves!

Really looking forward to this! Worth waiting for! This time it's for REAL!

kas1e is not trolling he's just a bit sceptical. Normally I would think the same way of products I might buy I'm just not thinking that way when it comes to Amiga stuff.

I really enjoyed the riddles but it's a shame it was not followed up by a new website today. At least 6.html could have been renamed indeX.html so people get straight to the specs. now.

@Atheist
I'm sorry, but you accuse someone who has a few questions about the hardware and software, probably after having been bitten by the AmigaOne SE/XE/Micro stuff.. of being a troll? Are you suggesting we're no longer able to look at something new with critical and somber eyes?

Don't get me wrong, by the looks of things, this is the best news we've seen in over 10 years.. but so was the XE.. Let's see how it works out and what the price is.. and then we can dance around naked in the streets if we feel like it - but only then. Doing it prior to us knowing anything but the specs is just ludicrous and renders us empty avatars without minds, imho.

edit: added "@atheist" so no one else feels wrongly hit by this one.

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
I don't want to flood this thread, but this is so totally awesome really.

You people here really can't imagine just how happy I, of all people, am.

The amount of arguing over the years on all of the messageboards out there that I did promoting and defending Amiga (some say I was a detriment, I never saw it that way, though).... pales in comparison to and is meaningless compared to what the developers of the SW invested personally (and things they had to cope with) and the people that invested in and produced the HW we have up to now were willing to sacrifice, on a chance.....

It was ALL worth every ASCII character I typed!

But enough about me!

I deeply appreciate all of the others that ALSO kept arguing for AmigaOne, Eyetech, and Hyperion too.

I appreciate Mr. Kinsel for what he accomplished. I felt very good about him, and very comfortable about Hyperion's grounds for statement to claim of ownership.

This is off topic, but I am just so HAPPY about how this is turning out, only factor is, too bad that over 2 years and a ton of money was lost over all of that. And before then, more years as well due to other uncontrollable events.

I sincerely THANK ALL PARTIES INVOLVED that they DID NOT CAVE to INSANE PRESSURES caused by BAD EVENTS ALL AROUND US AND HORRIBLE PEOPLE UP TO HORRIBLE THINGS!!!!

I mean, even the economy is working against an Amiga resurgence.... No shortages of pitfalls and barriers to be entangled by seemed to be the menu for the day, and every day!!!!

It could have all crumbled at any time, at any second!

For those that are concerned about how much this will cost.....

Please, just don't buy it and DO NOT COMMENT FURTHER!!!
I believe that that would be the nicest thing you could do, if you in any way, shape or form at all appreciate what they have done for you, for us, after all they've been through....

THEY CAN'T LOWER THE PRICE!

They would like to, but can not do so. It's impossible!

So, enjoy this moment,..... breathe, and see that good things still do happen.

Good for you that you can be happy just by the news only. For me news is not enough. It's only show you some perspectives , which maybe will be reality. When it will be out, then (maybe) it will be the way to put many "!!!!" and big letters as you like :)

Anyway, hope that all will be ready for release soon, and all the upcoming fixes will take less time if compare with fixes for SAM users (i remember that "Green screen" problems for half of year:), sorry, it was).

For now, just an 4.1.1 update will be good too :)

Hi GuruMeditation,

Please remember, after all that's happened to us, Hyperion is STILL HERE.

I feel that if you question them too much, you do not trust them.

I have an AmigaOne XE G4. I have no complaints.

I have no reservations of the quality of their honesty, integrity, nor capabilities.

There have been a few issues, and they are without a doubt unintentional and beyond their ability to do something about it.

Anyone that has serious doubts can shuffle on out at any time.

It's funny, nothing in your post seems to discourage questions regarding the current hardware. For instance, how does it perform, is it PCI-e version 1, version 2 or version 3..

And as for you having no complaints with the XE. Please, there are a number of complaints, none of which I fault Hyperion with (they didn't have the hw done, they didn't design it, they didn't pay for it, they were just left with trying to make the best out of a bad situation). If you say that you now have zero complaints about this, is only because you do not use any of those features that are problematic with that piece of hardware.

If a person is unable to take a step back and sceptically look at something, evaluate, question its integrity and worth to that person.. and instead just rushes in and buys whatever is put forth, no matter what is there.. then I would say this person is dumb, pure and simple.

The only reason I question their hardware, is so that I may be able to trust them further still. Give me a good answer, show me you are confident, and I will trust you even more. But I will never ever trust anyone blindly, as that is the hallmark of a lunatic.

Re: New Amiga Announced! - The X1000
Hi GuruMeditation,

Maybe I'm too trusting?

However, at some point you can't be too much of a heel. kas1e is "politely" (even using smileys) being over aggressive in his line of questioning....

When you go buy a new car, don't you trust the manufacturer enough to accept certain fundamentals? Why the HECK would you even go there if you're going to ask things like "do the seatbelts work?", "what motor oil is the first used in there, I might not like it", "call the company and ask them what sparkplugs they use"....

If you question everything, next thing you'll do is phone the tire company and ask them questions as well, and the windshield maker and the cushion company.....

If after all this time, people aren't in a position to think and accept that Hyperion is striving to make QUALITY products, well, I'm at a loss for words.

No one questioned their integrity, nor their strife to make a quality product? You're not one I'd care to discuss with anymore - first you say no one should question them, then you say people who think they aren't striving for quality.. and I'm.. what?

Look, you said no one should question their product and buy it. I object, as that's just stupid and I've given you plenty of reasons as to why. Now you change your tune and I hereby end this "discussion".

I am actually turning 35 years old at the 19th of June this year. I might as well be able to get a great computer system of this AmigaOne X1000 around June as my 35th birthday present!

Well, this news is absolutely not a kick in the teeth. It won't represent a betrayal of trust between Hyperion and the OS4 users. It will fail to disappoint thousands. It will not cause no excitement whatsoever and hardly anyone will be not grinning at this moment in time (unless they can't see beyond their own political rinse).

However, I've got more than three concerns but less than five. On the other hand when I dig myself out of this financial black hole it will be a present to myself.

Well done Trevor, and Hyperion.

And tall people are higher than smaller people.

Seriously though, the wait /to find out what this is/ is over. The wait now begins to when people can afford to buy one and it is available. Then they will have another wait, the wait to boot up.

I could postulate a few more waits if you want.

Will be interesting to see how Xena performs and what interesting new ideas and concepts will be built around it.. seems to open up so many avenues :)

Wonder which software (besides the OS itself) that will look for the chip and then enable some new feature (or just make things much faster)?

I totally agree with you, here all the sam users need an update to fix all the problems that amiga os 4.1 has.. for the new mainboard, apart the cpu i see not so a big hardware as the sata is already in the sam as long as the usb 2.0, the new thing is here the pci-express but i' d really like to see good 2d/3d drivers for amiga os 4.1 as i was amazing in seeing the 2d/3d drivers on morph os running on pegasos 2 and then seeing the same machine with a different os is a shame !.. so i really hope that os4developers team really think about it..

This is not a complain this is simply a point of view of a user who has spent his money and only would like to see and have a decent 2d/3d drivers.. only this nothing more nothing less...

I hope that Rogue really think seriously about this aspect of amiga os 4.1 and i am pretty sure he will improve it in the same way he already improved others aspect of amiga os

That was my point completely I would just like to see what we have completed before moving on to support for new boards.

When the X1000 is on sale to purchase and the existing issues with USB dropping out and graphics corruption have been fixed on my sam440ep, I will most likely upgrade.

I will wait on a good review first just to make sure it is stable and ready for use before I purchase but then I already have hardware to run OS4.1 on and enjoy doing so most days

Work on the OS and drivers hasn't stopped just because another group is working on new hardware. Nor are some people on the dev team working to support new hardware going to stop others from continuing to improve existing parts of the OS. It's a team effort, not just Rogue and his brother coding bits here and there.

Added to that, stuff like the USB and graphics drivers are common to all motherboards. Improve the USB drivers, and all systems with that hardware get a boost (e.g., ehci drivers for USB 2.0 for all USB 2.0 hardware). The same goes for graphics drivers.

So don't worry, the OS update is still coming, and Sam users won't be abandoned.

Hans

The website mentions shipping "summer 2010", so I doubt that there will be any pricing details released until nearer the time. This would allow for conversion rates to affect the price more accurately.

now i ask myself why do an announcement of something, when you do not advertise also the price.. this is a bad way to advertise.. in this way they have freezed the small amiga market .. if they would say the price, the final user could choose between a low level machine or an high level machine and wait for its production.. this is really not good for the amiga market, is not serious and a new company like a-eon that would appear as a serious and trasparent company should not act in this way..

How about a quick makeover of the A-EON site. At least let the "what is X?" on the index.html point straight to 6.html

People that reads the news from various news sources have not necessarily read about the riddles and the site just looks like a big mess atm.

When will we hear more about OS support for the AX-1000

I absolutly agree with you (looks like we both trolls). IF you start annonce something, holy crap, make the normal look of site ! That is 1 minut just rename 6.html to index.html ! (i just not say how ugly site looks right now). And we talk not about some "project", but that is OFFICIAL COMPANY ! Even 3d party projects in last time looks much-much better (like http://amineat.net).

And with that "look" and "Feel" of new amiga, ppls start to post newses on other sites, in all the world. And all the ppls see how it's crappy and unprofessional to make sites like that. And they will think "well, if site looks like that, what we can expect ?" Right. I think the same way, call me troll :)

And i not say, that none of techical questions was answered. Only Rogue angree on me because i ask something for real :)

On russian amiga-news site (amiga.org.ru) someone post that news (not i am), and they write "old song about the same" :)

It's just that when we finally DID attract someone from outside of the community it would have been nice with a pro looking and informative site.

It's really a shame AEON didn't prepare just a basic company website with some information on both the AX-1000 and AmigaOS4.1

As I've posted elsewhere, the puzzle pages were put out because we knew the community was expecting to hear something around now and we wanted to give you something fun. There should be a joint announcement of the project from A-Eon and Hyperion within the next
few days and we'll get a simple website up at the A-Eon address to replace the puzzle pages in time for that, but you'll have to wait until closer to release date for a formal announcement of the X1000 with all the specs, case photos, etc.

The answer is ok for me. The people responsible for the hw and the sw should get an standing applause for their hard work and for putting money into the amiga.

Yeah I'm looking forward to a new site although I had hoped it would also have much more information for us. But it will be good to be able to point people to a site where they can read about the new Amiga(OS).

And I'm sure the SW&HW people will get a standing applause on release
