Software News : Display 32bit Amiga OS 4.0 Icons in OS3.x!

Software News

Bernd Roesch (author of AfA) has "ported" the AROS icon.library to Amiga OS 3.x. He has also expanded it's capabilities. This new library makes it possible for Amiga OS 3.x to use the same icons as OS4!

Features:

-Displays OS4 style 32bit icons (dual image)
-Displays AROS style 32bit icons (dual image)
-Displays "regular" PNG icons
-Displays 256 color Glow Icons correctly (Ken's Icons)
-Speeds up icon display -- Glow Icons are 10x faster display and need NO pens (they have perfect color precision.)
-Replaces the Deficons utility
-Works with Workbench AND Dopus Magellan!(AmiKit)
-Icons display correctly while dragging (including PNG icons)

Bernd has also created a "patch" to allow RAWBinfo to work correctly with the new icon.library.

The new library requires AfA to be installed and replaces both PowerIcons and Deficons. Bernd recommends that you keep the 'start-icon' of PowerIcons on the desktop for compatibility testing and in the event something fails.

This is the final beta release. Please report any bugs or conflicts you find.

Mason's website is a great source of 32bit OS4 style icons and I've also painted a set of 32bit def_icons (plus a few other miscl icons) for use with Bernd's new library.

I'd love to have OS4, but that's a pipe dream.

Hardware hasn't been available in over 2 years (I tried to buy a motherboard in Dec 2004!) and now I can no longer afford it (even if it ever does become available).

I paint icons -- that's what I contribute to the Amiga community. This new library allows me to continue contributing to the community.

For me, this is the best news in a long, long time.

I'd hate to think that OS4 users were too elitist to be happy for us 3.x users.

I assume you mean the AmiKit news (since this library was included in AmiKit).

AmiKit is a collection of software the runs on WinUAE -- this is a library for ALL AmigaOS 3.x users.

It's being beta tested on REAL Amigas as well as emulated ones.

There are more to AmigaOS4 then nice eye candy; I hope every one realizes this.

I have I do not mind a unified icon-system for all operating systems; it makes sense to be able to quickly identify files as what they are.

Well I use E-UAE, whit out an updated Icon system on OS3.5, I need to replace OS4/PNG icons whit old icons on the directories I have created on OS4, this how I do it to day, I don?t like that so welcome this, but I can use it because its to CPU heavy for E-UAE (whit out JIT).

I have no problems with others cloning Amiga OS 4.0's way of doing things. After all, it is the best compliment of all. I think this effort just demonstrates how Amiga OS 4.0 is leading the way. The emulators and clones are following which is just as it should be. The real trick will be maintaining that lead with 4.1 etc.

P.S. Nice work on those icons! Now I know what you were so busy with....
