Software News : Gimp 2.4.7 for AmiCygnix released
Posted by cygnusEd on 2010/8/8 21:47:20 (3839 reads) News by the same author
Software News

A new version of Gimp for AmiCygnix is now available on OS4-depot.

Gimp is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image
composition and image authoring.

This is new in this release:

* New version 2.4.7

* Plug-ins are working now. Other file formats, filter effects etc. are possible now.

* Compiled in modules for color selection and display filters.

Because of the high amount of data, most of the plug-ins are published in
separate packages. Two of them do contain loader and saver plugins. The first
one is optional only, because the included picture formats can also be loaded
through internal plug-ins. The internal plug-ins are faster, but they do not
provide a GUI for changing settings.

Please read the documentation (README) for more informations!

@cygnusEd

Really really big Thank You ! You're The Man ! I love you !

This is one of the best days of Amiga hobby ! Now when Frieden brothers can make Timberwolf more mature I can throw my mainstream x86 computer out of the window and go back using my Amiga completely alone again after so many many years since 1990's ! (Even more when X1000 and Sam460ex will be out !)

Easy, but all that AmiCygnix related progs have slow screen-refreshing (the problem of amycygnix itself). I.e. it feels a bit slow visually. But from other side its pretty stable.

If compare with LodePaint which works over opengl, GIMP over AmyCygnix works faster. As far as i remember. So, it's definately worth of installing.

@Antique

It's very simple: Just download the base archive, unpack it an launch the installer script. You have to answer some questions, but you can simply choose the default value, if you don't know what to do.
After a reset it is ready to use!
Install every application, while the Desktop is not running. That's all .

@all

Stay tuned for more plug-ins

 Re: Gimp 2.4.7 for AmiCygnix released
@kas1e

The base package of Gimp contains only some simple (internal) loaders. They are based on GDKPixbuf.
If you need a full implemented loader / saver, you have to wait for the loader plugin package volume 1. This package replaces all internal loaders with the original Gimp plug-ins. The JPEG loader should support progressive JPEG.
I will upload it tomorrow.

ya I can confirm that Gimp under AmiCygnix is a bit faster in every situation compared to LodePaint on my Samflex....also the installation of AmiCygnix is dead simple so it's 100% worth the install time and GNumeric and AbiWord are great programs that also run under AmiCygnix

@cygnusEd
Thanks for explain. But as i can read in gimp readme, jpeg already internal and should support load/save by default for now ? Or you also remove internal loaders from main archive due to big size ?

At the moment you're using the internal loader. He is compiled into the Gimp binary and it is only a simple implementation. It's a kind of fallback loader.

When the loader package volume 1 is out, you can install the original loader, which overrides the internal loader.
BTW: If you only need the JPEG loader, launch the installer script in "Expert" mode (when it's out).

But that internal loader should load jpgs ? Or it works only with classic jpg, but not with progressive ones ?

Gimp works very well on my Sam-Flex 733. It is fast and no GrimReaper so far.

Well done!

 Re: Gimp 2.4.7 for AmiCygnix released
@kas1e

Oops - I was wrong. Had a look at the sources and progressive JPEG should also work with the internal loader. So progressive loading for the internal loader is broken.

Please install the loader plug-in from the loader package volume 1!

Quote:
But that internal loader should load jpgs ?

Internal loaders do exist for these formats:
- XCF
- BMP
- GIF
- ICO (Windows-Icon)
- IFF-ILBM
- JPEG
- PCX
- PNG
- PNM
- RAS
- TGA
- TIFF
- WBMP
- XBM
- XPM

Advantage of internal loaders: Fast and always available. And it saves diskspace, because the external loaders do need about 145MB!
Advantage of external loaders: Full featured and with GUI

BTW: You cannot use both at the same time. If the external loader plug-in is installed, the internal loader is deactivated! The internal loaders were created, when the plug-in interface was still broken. Now it is only a fallback loader.

Hope you have used the installer script?

Please check the protection flags of the file "Cygnix:Software/Gimp-2.4.7/Start_gimp.bat" - the script flag must be set. Also check the execute flags of the binaries in "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/bin/gimp-2.4" and of the plugins in "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins"

 Re: Gimp 2.4.7 for AmiCygnix released
@CygnixEd
Very possible that for me was problems because of dunno what, but when i re-run gimp 3-4 times, then, internal loader start to work (and all kind of jpg, and png and alt).

Nextly i trying to install loaders1. And looks like i do something very wrong, but they not just slow, they unusable. Making a preview of JPG which are 1024x768 of size (120kb only), get about 20 seconds, and loading of image i think get about 30-40 seconds. With internal ones, everything fast and works as should (i think in 1-2 seconds).

That all on peg2 / 1ghz.

Maybe i do something wrong ?

Dunno, but i have 1gb of memory. Right now deleting all plugins directory in cygnix/lib/gimp/2.0/plugin-ins/ , and internal loader start to works again, and they really fast . It maybe even faster that 1 seconds, all happens imediatelly.

Btw, i also have some MemGuard hits when use plugins.

It is correct, that the external loaders are much slower, but on your system they are slower than on my SAM 733 Mhz:

JPeg, 800 kB, 1200 x 1740:
Preview 20 seconds
Load 34 seconds

No idea, what is wrong.

Anyway, looks like it very slow all in all, so internal ones are better choice for. Sadly that PIP mode have wrong colors, because will be cool to have gimp icon on WB, which are just a script, which run amycygnix + gimp in the window (which can make feel like it "native" ).

After having Abiword et al. runnning in a WB window for some time I switched back to use the "normal" AmiCygnix screen - I use (and used) the "screens" concept on my Amigas since the beginning, so OWB and DOpus and ArtEffect run on their own screens. And it doesn't "feel wrong" to use Abiword or Gimp on it's own screen also (despite the fact, that it is a own "desktop" - but what else is a usual "public screen"? ).

 Re: Gimp 2.4.7 for AmiCygnix released
@kas1e

That's the reason, why the internal loaders were published. The plug-in implementation is not very fast. But the funny thing is, that some filter plug-ins are dead slow and some others do have a good performance. No matter of their complexity.

If it is important for you to use the PIP mode in AmiCygnix, you could replace the file "Sys:Kickstart/ATIRadeon.chip" with the one from the first release of OS4.1. Since update 1 it doesn't work anymore. But I can't tell you, which disadvantages it has.

Edit: "Sys:Kickstart/ATIRadeon.chip" from update 1 does also not work. You need the original file from OS4.1!

Fantastic, shame about the slow sreen refresh in AmiCygnix, but still very usable and nice to have access to all the Gimp filters and tools on OS4. Thanks!

Will probably still use ArtEffect more in reality though because of its faster startup and image loading.
