Thanks Max!
I might be imagining things, but my network download speeds seem noticeably faster, pictures on web pages were stalling before applying the patch. |

It might be a sort of placebo effect, i notice some WB improvement too but i can't say for sure, the sure thing is that some games is now faster, GLHexen 2 is the one, but also Rayman on Virtual Jaguar and maybe others (but not all)
Great work ACube ! |

Btw, those ones who have problems with python based games (like for example AlienBreed), can try it again with new patch ?
Just interesting to know, will it plays fine for now or still not. |

Looks like L2 make sinse then.. Will be interesting to try on sam460. @m3x Btw, all those updates-patches will be in the next aos4 update internally ? I.e. its only for the current aos41u2 users ? |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
Or maybe somethings different, WipeOut 2097 is too slow as well while for example it runs faster on an AmigaOne G3 600, this is very strange ...
About patches, this specific patch it's not OS related, so it must be applied on every Sam board, conversely the Sam440ep_setup as any software component will be integrated in the next AmigaOS's update |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
@samo79
As i understand its is os specific. Because just version of aos4 for Sams, just not set something which should to set, and those patches do that. And as i read on os4depot for now: Quote:
So it will be inside the OS (for sam specific part of code in kernel or somethere deep like that). |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
Yes exactly
PCI update is related to --> Sam440/Flex (hardware) specific Sam Setup is related to --> Sam440/Flex (software) specific The second patch (software) will come by default on the future update Maybe all that patches will speed also the new Sam460 |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
Where do we get the previous patch? Someone mentioned OS4Depot but I can't find it there. Is there a way to find out if the correct patches are installed (version # or something). I've think I've added several patches or updates since I originally purchased my SAM-Flex 800. I'd like to be sure I'm up-to-date.

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
Hello,
I haven't chance with this update. It's like before I have installed debian (when only AOS4). When on the Uboot, there are only just one choice and here my keyboard start to work bad. Hard to have return working and impossible to have space working for the update. I haven't problem with uboot and my keyboard with AOS4 AND linux installed or with the AROS LIVECD but I have keyboard problems when only one choice on the Uboot. NOTE: When I use enter to do some settings on the Uboot, no keyboard problems. Yes, an easy solution is chance your keyboard but I have a problem with just one key (or two) with Uboot choice (only one choice=problem and more than one, no problems). yes, Its funny.. |

This patch will increment write speed for all PCI devices of about 15%-30% (depending on configuration). This patch should be used together with the previous patch released earlier to get a complete (READ + WRITE) speedup. I'm not talking about the setup ustility that modifies the POM2 PCI registers. Unless the above quote is inaccurate there is a previous patch. A patch implies an ISO that would be written to a CD and used to patch the system software. Is the announcement referring to a utility and patch or 2 patches and the utility on top of that?????? |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
@ xenic
This is the only patch I've ever heard of that needs an iso to be written. It does because it PERMANANTLY modifies some chip registers with no way of undoing it that has to be done without the OS running. Think of it as a hardware modification rather than an OS patch. The first one is a utility that 'patches' the system, it truly is a 'patch' as it's a temporary program to fix something before the fix is built into the system. Basically: First one: OS patch, run from a utility every bootup. Second one: Hardware patch, run once, undoable. |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
@Severin
OK. I have several SAM UBOOT update iso images which have been called patches by some people. I am just trying to be sure I didn't miss an update or patch that might be necessary before adding the new ones. It's just a little semantic confusion on my part; update, patch, utility etc. I think you've clarified it for me now. |

That depends on the kind of program you run. Faster RAM will benefit every program, while faster PCI writes only benefit graphically intensive programs. If the CPU is close to 100% when running a program/game, then it is *likely* that reducing RAM speed will make it slower. |

Installed and not really noticed much difference in performance either way so far, however DGen seemed to run smoother than before with larger windows. Icons seem to be loading noticably faster in WB windows, but I suspect this has more to do we re-partioning and formatting the hard drive this week plus changing file system for most paritions to JXFS. |

Nice work! I measured approximately 10% overall speedup with DvPlayer MPEG playback on my Sam-Flex-667. Not a very dramatic speedup but every bit counts :) Btw I get: ---> VIDEO BUS <--- READ: 27 MB/Sec WRITE: 58 MB/Sec Getting PCI-GART or DMA working for data transfer to/from video memory would give a more dramatic speedup. P.S.: Check your mailbox I sent you an E-Mail |

Re: PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
@m3x
Regarding MPlayer and DVplayer. I have no idea why, but neither player would present a DVD playback without extreme frame skipping and voice way out of sync while using the standard CD/DVD connection of the 440ep/667MHz. To get decent playback the SATA cable had to be plugged into the connector under the HD standard connector (port 1 in MPlayer GUI). Those problems, and others, are now gone after doing just the pci-mini-update. The sam440ep_setup has also added to the performance of the Sam. Thank You. Got any more tricks up your sleeve? |
