Clone-A is an amazing project. If you get the chance go and see for yourself what they have done. I was lucky enough to see Clone-A at AmiWest 2006.

It's a pity that you would need the roms to build a complete setup. But a small box no larger than a vhs case, with a card reader for taking on adf files, two joystick ports, ps/2 for keyboard, s-video out and a proper power supply (not the lousy c64 in a joystick battery variant) and you'd have a neat retro box for the living room.
