Re: SAM460EX BASIC SYSTEM AVAILABLE - NOW!
It doesn't say anything about it, but I assume it comes with a DVD drive/burner as well. If so, is that and the HD connected with an SiI311[2|4], using up the PCI slot, or is the DVD drive an external USB one and the HD on the built-in SATA port?

Re: SAM460EX BASIC SYSTEM AVAILABLE - NOW!
There are two packages on our webstore: SAM 460ex Basic and SAM 460ex Complete.
The lower cost Basic system is shipped without DVDRW. The Complete system has SATA 4- port Raid card with DVDRW drive. |

Re: SAM460EX BASIC SYSTEM AVAILABLE - NOW!
Ah, I see - so that's why it didn't say anything about the DVD .
Anyway, that's absolutely a usable configuration as well. I'm running my 460 the same way ATM, with an external USB DVDRW drive and a sound card in the PCI slot. Of course, when the system is already installed, it's not so urgent for most users to have a DVD drive, but sooner or later it will come in handy. BTW: A tip for anybody who follows the same route and gets a USB burner: Make sure it has an easily accessible power switch, as you probably want it turned off except when you need to use it. For me, at least, it prolongs the boot time massively to have it on. And since it's USB, it can just be turned on after booting and be available like most other USB devices. Works for me. @niels
That's not a dumb idea. Maybe you could post your dvd type? If someone else is planning on getting one? |

Re: SAM460EX BASIC SYSTEM AVAILABLE - NOW!
Well, I just got one that I happened to see was available at my usual Danish supplier. It's a Lite-On eHAU324. It works for me.
But I will not make any recommendations or the opposite, as i am using it with a beta system, and you never know what differences that can cause. (Not that I expect any.) But I'd say most any normal USB CD or DVD drive, reader, writer or rewriter, would work. I don't actually know whether the writing works, though, as I haven't had a chance to try that yet. Reading CDDAs (Audio CDs) seems extremely slow, I have a feeling it might be due to some DRM stuff built into the drive or something? But regular CDRs are fine. Best regards, Niels |
