Re: eGame r4 released
Give a try for new version (and in case my previous comment vanished on old page), there is some notices:
1). I know that you didn't want (or do not have code in portable-gui?) to make an "rmb" menus , but its really necessary and users friendly even (even!) for just a simply "About / About MUI / Quit" entrys. You may found it not-necessary, but every mui (and reaction apps as well) have it, and that all make usage of programm a "native and usuall feel". Saying that its not necessary, its like saying that close gadgets not necessary, or iconify ones. Its just as all our programms done, so why broken it.. So, as first suggestion is to add RMB menus support to portable gui-module, but if it already have it, then just to egame (and to any other mui app) as well. 2). Thats again come somehow to RMB, where should be "Open File", or "Add a game" or anything like that, so user no need to drag&drop anything. Its just really pain now, to open all those directories where i have games, and drag them. Simply RMB menu, with Open or Add or whatever entry and brining an ASL requester for will be a good impovement for usability. Those users who prefer D&D will do D&D, those ones who prefer rmb/asl-requesters will go that way. Which is only better to give users a choice. 3). And in end, if you will add those 2 moments, i will happy to donate a bit to support effort :) |

Yes, it's appreciated.
A must have to launch RunInUAE whdload games. Just to drag an entire whdload directory on eGame, and voila ! Thanks |

Re: eGame r4 released
@kas1e
I am still experimenting with the best way of doing user interface on the Amiga, but I really like to keep things as simple as possible for users (which I realise is probably not something you care for, given that you prefer manually scripting games to use UAE rather than using RunInUAE). That means where-ever-possible not adding more buttons (and menu items). And not providing several ways of doing the same thing (even Microsoft has basically gotten rid of menus, thanks to their tabbed-toolbar Ribbon interface). From a technical point of view, adding a menu should be no problem (see PictureAlbum for menu usage)... but from a simplicity (& ease-of-use) point of view, I am not yet convinced they make sense for eGame. Designing a good user interface is hard, and it can easily be ruined by just taking a few steps in the wrong direction. Adding menus which do nothing new feels like one such step, even if it may look fairly harmless on it's own. Adding menus for just "About" & "Quit" just does not make sense to me: In the window titlebar it already says what it is & who wrote it. You can quit from the window's close gadget. BTW, I've actually already implemented adding stuff via a file requester, but only in the AROS version (due to Zune's lack of drag'n'drop support in ABIv0), but to be honest I personally found it quite slow (and generally clumsy) compared to drag'n'drop, so I cannot imagine anyone wanting to use it instead of drag'n'drop. Final remarks: I will happily listen to feedback. Just don't expect that I will immediately agree! For example, Window mode for RunInUAE does not make much sense to me (due to UAE limitations), but after enough requests for it I did finally add it (against my better judgment!). |
