Since we created the Sam460 motherboard we have seen many of our customers adding to their board: a graphic card, a sound card and a SATA card. It was obvious that we could find a way to make a cheaper product removing the onboard audio, video and SATA features.

We then decided to produce Sam460 motherboards with the following components removed: SM502 audio/video chip, video connector and onboard SATA. This new Sam460 will have the same number of expansion slots (PCI, PCIe) as the well known Sam460.

This allows us to reduce the cost of the motherboard for our customers. That's why this new board is called Sam460cr, "cr" stands for "cost reduced".

Our shop will be updated later today.

Cheaper and still as powerful as before.
We hope you'll enjoy the extra effort we do for all Amigans.

Nice to see Acube trying to make their products even more cheap. :)

I can understand people installing a graphic card (the on-board video was notoriously slow & at least used to be buggy.)

I can also understand people installing a SATA card (since there was only one on-board SATA connector).

But installing an audio card... was the on-board audio really that bad? (Obviously they can't remove the costly video chip, without removing it's audio functions as well. I am just surprised they claim customers had commonly been installing an audio card.)

@ChrisH

Acube have been including an Envy24HT sound card with the Sam460ex motherboards
for some time now.
They offer the same sound card for Euro 22.00 for those who purchased before this.

I have a Sam460ex and use the onboard audio, and think that it's not bad for playing sounds. I've never tried recording, so I can't comment on what that's like. Normally you don't want to use onboard audio for recording, though (they always pick up too much noise).

Either way, a quality sound card will deliver better audio, and there's no point in keeping the SM502 just for the audio.

It seems like both A-Cube's & A-Eon's newest hardware is tending towards using cards for graphics & sound (and possibly other things), presumably as a way of avoiding writing new drivers from scratch (which are an extremely costly & time-consuming thing to do). While a bit of a shame from an elegance perspective, it's something they probably should have done in the first place!

Any ETA? I'd love to buy the "cr" early next year.
