Re: Availability of Sam440ep
Congratulations on the availability!
My only wish now is for a certain OS running on it.... Then I'd snap one up in no time... |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
I think we all need it, this company has produced what it said it would produce, and you have the opportunity to purchase their product. Unlike other companies who have promised and not delivered. BTW it uses uboot 1.2 which I am told also works on the A1 although I don't think there is support for USB Keyboards at boot-up yet.

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
I'd be happy to run a stable Linux distro on this. It's pretty competitive when you compare it to other systems on mini-itx.com. A few more Mhz would be nice, but my current home server is a PII at 400Mhz, so it'll be a step up from that.

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
@yoodoo2
It's more than a step up. You can't compare the MHz of an PII to those of this processor cycle for cycle. I would guess this processor is atleast twice as capable as your current one, if not more. On top of that, there's caches to include, how many instructions per cycle it can do, not to mentionthe numerous built-in facets of this processor, compared to the very little in any x86 CPU of today. |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
Ok.. Thats got me interested as I'm about to build a mediacentre to connect to my Large screen TV
I want to run Myth TV as thats awesome.. Is that available for Os4 ? Or anything equivalent ? No point in buying it for Linux as It's much more cost effective to buy THIS and install Gutsy Gibbon on it using THIS guide. |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
If your intention is to build a mediacentre, then Sam440 is the wrong choice. It is too expensive for what it offers (slow speed). You can run Linux but it is better supported on x86. I say buy the Abit motherboard. It's cheap and looks neat.
I don't understand all this excitement about the Sam440 release. It doesn't run OS4 and we don't know if it ever will. When the OS4 court case ends it will look even more outdated with that price. There have been many attempts to make new OS4 hardwares, but nothing happened, only hoping and people being excited about nothing! I don't see a reason to believe it will become true this time. |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
Helge, amigacooke?
ACube hardware/s, have been planned with embedded enviroment as main target (which will lend in possible MONEY). If (and i don't see why not) these boards will be suitable for AmigaOS4 usage, better for all us. If you think that is viceversa, then you are wrong and you'll lend in a huge disappointment. |

We cannot make money with selling OS4 to retro peoples, therefore OS4 is planned for the embedded market. But nothing came out of it and I doubt it will ever happen. Compared to other embedded OS, OS4 lacks too many features and is behind in development. Is anybody aware of clients that have bought Sam440 for embedded usage? Which OS will they run on it? Crux Linux? |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
@Helge
If they can get large orders of Sam440 in the embedded market then the price comes down for everyone. Genesi managed to do it with the Efika. ACube also have a lite version on there roadmap. I'd imagine that this will cut out certain features that most users wouldn't miss such as the FPGA and Flash device adapter. Although I don't know how much truth there is in it, but I heard a rumour that, at Pianeta, ACube said they won't forever for the court case and have set a deadline for the release OS4 on Sam440. |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
Doesn't seem to be many details about this machine.
It's like an AmigaOne? It comes with OS4? It's Hyperion-approved? Does it come with that anti-piracy chip so it runs OS4? What about MorphOS, will that run? |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
The thing is I'm no longer interested in the thoughts, plans, theories, finances, opinions, legal cases or any of the fluff that surrounds 'Amigaland'.
I won't be disappointed, because I don't use Amiga OS for any of my computing tasks any more. I am only interested in a retail available, Amiga OS ready to run system. If it never turns up, it will be a shame, but for me no more than that because I have effectively already moved on. |

I have no idea what this means but you can email Hyperion if you want and ask. Quote: Does it come with that anti-piracy chip so it runs OS4? There is no anti-piracy chip to run OS4 but there is some anti-piracy protection software and this could easily be added to any board that might run OS4. Quote: What about MorphOS, will that run? For everything related to MorphOS I recommend posting at www.morphzone.org instead. |

Re: Availability of Sam440ep
@ssolie:
Thanks. Looks like just a bare motherboard rather than a proper computer. And no OS to run on it, seems like something that would not be useful for any purpose. Since it's not mentioned anywhere at Hyperion's nor Genesi's sites I must assume it is not sanctioned by them. Maybe if I can find somewhere to download OS4 it would be worth investigating further; otherwise it seems like a waste of time and money: a computer isn't much use without an operating system. |
