ACube Systems is pleased to announce a new release of the UBoot firmware for its Sam460 line of motherboards.

For the first time in Amiga history, it is now possible to boot from an NVMe SSD.

This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the Amiga platform. Thanks to recent advancements, users can now experience dramatically improved boot speeds and data access times by utilizing modern NVMe solid-state drives—bringing the Amiga into a new era of performance and reliability.

This development not only enhances the capabilities of current NG systems but also demonstrates the ongoing innovation and dedication within the Amiga community. Booting from an NVMe SSD was once considered impossible—today, it is a reality.

This update is completely free for all users.

We are excited to announce a new version packed with important features and improvements—available as a free download.

New in this release:

- NVMe SSD driver – For the first time ever, you can boot from an NVMe drive using a standard NVMe-to-PCIe adapter.
- PCIe SATA2 support – Added driver for the Silicon Image 3132 controller, allowing booting from both SATA SSDs and DVD drives.
- DDR2 timing adjustments – Fine-tune DDR2 RAM timings for faster memory access.
- Customizable USB stack – Choose between EHCI (faster for mass storage) or OHCI (greater compatibility with keyboards).
- Enhanced "sata" command – Now displays more detailed information about drivers and connected devices.
- Improved serial console navigation – Navigate menu items using W and S keys.
- General bug fixes and improvements.
- Unified source code – Now streamlined for both 460ex and 440ep platforms.

An updated installation guide is included, covering the standard ISO image method as well as alternative installation methods via TFTP and USB.

If you are not comfortable installing UBoot yourself, we also offer fully updated UBoot chips through our online store.

Additional information:
Please note: UBoot and UBoot updater make use of GPL code and thus are both published under GPL.

 Great update
Great update, thanks ACube! It is perfect, that even the old little Sam440ep from 2007 can use modern devices and is still supported.

 wow!
Very cool ! Sadly wasn't able to betatest it in acceptable timeframe, but good to see it's out in the wild !

Have question through : this NVMe driver allowing to boot from, is just "uboot" based driver with which you can see NVMe based devices formated in something like FAT32 ? Or, this is "complete" driver which can handle AmigaOS4 formatted stuff like SFS2 ?

 Re: wow!
@kas1e

it is an U-Boot driver, an AmigaOS4.1 driver is required to use NVMe with the operating system.

Same with the Silicon Image 3132 PCIe SATA2 controller, you need an AmigaOS4.1 driver (hint)

But this one probably can read only some FS ? I mean to read files from NVME based device , some FS is need it, and which ones is supported by uboot which also supported by os4, SFS0/2 ? Or FFS ?

Does that mean there's a 440EP update coming?

@kas1e

it can read all the filesystems that SLB_v2 supports to boot AmigaOS4.1, currently FFS and SFS/0, if in future a new filesystems support is added to SLB_V2, it will read it too.

Congrats to ACube I’ll never forget my SamFlex@800 which brought me back into AMIGA after I read that OS4.1 was finally released

Would be awesome (wishful thinking) that my X1000 firmware will one day will also be updated

SLB_v2 supports ISO9660 and SFS\2 as well (implemented by me), and some Linux file system (not sure anymore if it's ext2fs or ext3fs, implemented by Andrea).
For SFS\0: Not my current versions of it, only older ones, like John's 1.84 and other ports based on his 1.84 sources (AROS, MorphOS). In read-only mode the old SFS code works in 99.9% of the cases for reading SFS\0 partitions created by my newer versions, but it's not 100% compatible.

NO! You don't have, nor wont get any permission to use my SLB_v2 sources in GPL software like ub2lb/parthenope.
One of the main reasons there is a SLB_v2 at all instead of it's code being in U-Boot itself, additionally to not enough space for it in the AmigaOne SE/XE/µA1 U-Boot EEPROM and easier to update, was to be able to use closed source code.

AFAIK amigaboot.(ub|of) additionally supports NGFS, but only the old version.
I don't know how much work it would be, but maybe you could add the amigaboot.ub support from the X5000/A1222 U-Boot to the Sam versions?

We at ACube have no intention to work/edit SLB_V2 or use its source code for anything.
