Software News

To gain some more attention and hopefully some more people to test the device *and* report their findings, i decided to make a news item this time:

I've uploaded the new version 0.28 of my rtl81x9.device to os4depot.
It's a SANA-II ethernet device for AmigaOS4 and any network card based on 8139(A/B/C/D) or 8169 chips.

Everyone out there with a Realtek 8139 (100Mbit) or 8169 (1000Mbit) card spare please give it a spin. There are some problems left, which I can't track down on my own but simply need input of more people than myself.

FYI here some speed figures between my A1 and my Linux-Box.

100Mbit Full-Duplex RTL8139D:
Quote:

7.Progs:Tools/TcpSpeed> TcpSpeed.cyb c 192.168.0.1
20971520 bytes read, 10951 kB/s
7.Progs:Tools/TcpSpeed> TcpSpeed.cyb s 20
20971520 bytes written, 9130 kB/s

1000Mbit Full-Duplex RTL8169:
Quote:
7.Progs:Tools/TcpSpeed> TcpSpeed.cyb c 192.168.0.1
20971520 bytes read, 13482 kB/s
7.Progs:Tools/TcpSpeed> TcpSpeed.cyb s 20
20971520 bytes written, 7537 kB/s

You may notice the bad speeds for the 8169. Well, thats exactly one of the problems I can't track down only with my own card and A1 as test case.

Have fun!

Those with DHCP problems on OS4 should give this a spin. If DHCP works more reliably with this driver we will know the eth3com.device is at fault versus something in the TCP/IP stack.

Nice!
I hope the speed of the RTL8169 driver would be better in future versions.

@ AmigaPapst

Hey... it's still 150% of the 8139 speed.. well.. at least for download..

Seriously, i'm hunting for optimizations since months, but nothing i tried (and i tried a *LOT*) really improved things.. so right now i think it could just be the A1 being not capable of transferring at higher rates per second.. (and others think that too who probably know the A1 far better than me)

After all, i have to transfer a sh*tload of small data chunks (i.e. the Ethernet packets of around 1.5 kB!) while other drivers, like for ide/sata/scsi, can make use of huge PCI bursts.. so this might explain, why the 8169 is that lame..

I'm thinking about porting the driver to Aros to test it on x86 hardware, where the 8169 is known to reach up to 30 MB/sec in both directions... well, everything a question of time..

Happy to see newer improved drivers come out.

Keep up the good work
