Software News

A couple of days ago I've received a SAM Flex from ACube Systems for debugging and resolving the SAM audio problems. I am pleased to announce that the new driver fixes the most important issues, namely:

* The noise when starting to playback a sound
* General noise issues resulting from the Aux/Video monitoring being turned on by default. You now don't need to run Mixer anymore to prevent these problems.

In addition to this, a new Mixer has also been released with ARexx support for the SAM audio and a bug fix that could result in all faders being at 0dB on start-up when no Mixer.prefs was present.

Both cs4281 audio driver (5.4) and Mixer application (1.22) can be downloaded from OS4depot (check the Uploads if they are not there yet).

Enjoy!

I heard that Davey was once given a clay puppet and after he locked himself into a room for an hour he came back and the puppet could sing "Ave Maria" ... standing on ONE foot ... with it's eyes CLOSED ...

Davey, you are the god of sound, thanks for all your hard work

Nice! A Mixer request -- can a button be added to put the level back to mid-level (or default) for each source?

Something I am remembering that I noticed on OS4.0 --- in the sound prefs, when selecting a sound and playing this over and over (in test mode), it keeps on eating more and more memory and never releasing the memory back. I haven't check to see if this is the case on 4.1 on SAM.

 Re: SAM audio issues resolved
DaveAE,

1. Thanks. I hadn't paid any attention. I was still on something like version 1.15 for Mixer. On this, any idea why I can't get alternate image sets working? I've renamed directories so the base "Image" dir is "Image_orig" and then renamed the "Sweet" images directory as "Images". Still, the appearance doesn't change a bit.

2. You mention getting rid of "noise when starting to playback a sound" in the Sam driver. I get this on my A1-XE (fixed) using the onboard VIA AC97 sound. (at least with the sound file I have it playing at start up. Using AmigaAMP and the PPC engine I don't get that noise.) Could there be a similar bug in the VIA driver?

Thanks for all your work.

Paul

What I use in Audio Evolution is SHIFT+click to reset the slider to 0dB. The problem in Mixer is that 0dB is not the default for all sliders and I'd like the behavior to be predictable for the user. Just setting it to 0dB on SHIFT+click might be an option though.

@Paul

I'm not sure about question one. Please verify your tooltypes for something like imagedir.

Your noise-on-startup problem on the VIA is because on start-up, if sound is played or not, turning on the AC'97 causes a nasty bump. I spent hours trying to get rid of it, but I can't. You can't mute the output before you turn on the power. On SAM, on every playback there was noise, this is not the case on the VIA, only the first time you boot.

Dave,

Thanks for th e rpeply.

At least now it makes sense to me why the noise is at startup but not later when I run AmigaAMP.

re: Mixer images: Wrong location for Images directory. Working now. Thanks

IMAGEPATH is the correct tooltype, I believe. Mine is set to the absolute path of my Images dir, but I guess a relative one would work as well.

Best regards,
